The latest Road Transport Department (JPJ) registration data is out, and in addition to the usual 1-2-3-4 of a Malaysian pair and a Japanese pair, plus BYD in fifth place since October, we see significant increases in November from Mazda (ninth to sixth, 849 to 1,398 units) and Tesla (19th to seventh, 320 to 1,301 units).
Mazda, of course, had quite a few recent launches: the CX-60 and CX-80 in September, and the facelift of the 3 1.5 High Plus and BT-50 in November. However, the US EV brand has been up and down for most of the year, but this is its best month yet, just like Mazda’s – it’s actually Hiroshima’s first four-figure sales month this year.
After many months in fifth or sixth place, Chery unfortunately has to settle for ninth place in November with 1,069 units (a shadow of the August high of 1,735 units). Colleague Omoda | Jaecoo did slightly better with 1,092 units, while Mitsubishi was only two units behind Chery. Great Wall Motor (GWM) did well; it just had its best month this year with 642 units, earning a spot right outside the top 10.

Now that 2025 is only a month away, what does the overall standings look like? Perodua is aiming for a record number of 359,000 copies this year, so 36,133 should be sold in December. Proton aims for 156,000; cuts 6,000 exports and needs to sell another 12,000 units domestically before the year is out.
Toyotas at 112,903 units; Honda 64,730 – that’s the Hilux and exploration/grey market Alphard effect for you. Omoda | Jaecoo is the best-performing Chinese automaker with almost 16,000 units, well ahead of BYD’s 11,870 and parent brand Chery’s 11,458. It looks like Mitsubishi could end the year in a very respectable sixth place, while Mercedes-Benz keeps BMW out of the top 10 with 8,195 versus 6,926 units.
We are now on the final straight! Here’s how the brands stack up from an EV perspective.
