Look – if you don’t participate in TGL, if you prefer to play golf outdoors and unsupervised, if you are completely uninterested in learning more about “the hammer” or who might play for “Bay GC”, then I’m not here to convince you.
But that was a hellish moment.
Tom Kim stepped onto the tee on the penultimate hole of the season. His side was down one point, but they had just thrown the hammer, doubling the value of the hole. If he lost the gap, Jupiter Links’ season would be over. As TGL says, this is as big as it gets. How did he react? By flying his wedge straight over the flag and watching it roll back to the center of the bottom of the cup.
This is the moment – followed by five immediate responses about why this was a dream ending for TGL.
my goodness Tom Kim, hammer thrown, 1 down, playoffs on the line, makes an ace, what a moment, this whole thing is a fever dream pic.twitter.com/VPH3KA0ovk

1. Tom Kim was built for this moment.
Week in and week out, there aren’t many golfers who go crazy after doing something cool. But put Tom Kim in a team setting – whether it’s the Presidents Cup or TGL – and you can pretty much guarantee he’ll go crazy at some point. So when something as mind-boggling as this hole-in-one happened, it could have been a more perfect man at a more perfect time. (We need Kim to find his game on the PGA Tour; he’s too much fun not to have in the mix.)
2. Tiger Woods fist pumping is a TGL dream.
See, when Woods and Rory McIlroy and their various business partners were creating TGL, they probably imagined Woods with his fist on the ground. own hole-outs instead of those of his teammates – but each time he falls to his knees as if he’s just made a hole That chip shot at Augusta National, it’s a victory for whatever moment he’s celebrating.
3. It’s a miracle no one was hurt.
Again, golfers are not used to celebrating and they are certainly not used to celebrating as a team.
“I’ve never been tackled before,” Kim said after the win.
It’s a miracle he didn’t knock out Homa, he also ended up on the deck, and given Woods’ health status, it’s also not nice to see Kim jumping into his arms. Let’s be happy that everyone walks away from this…
4. This also meant redemption for Kevin Kisner.
Kim’s moment ultimately could have been for naught if Kevin Kisner had lost the final hole. Considering he was playing a lengthy par-5 against the swinging Wyndham Clark – and considering Kisner hasn’t exactly been TGL’s star thus far – the odds didn’t seem to be in his favor.
“I texted Max Homa at 7:15 this morning when I saw the distance booklet and said if it gets to 15, we’re probably screwed because Wyndham can be there in two and I can’t,” Kisner said.
But Kiz dissected the hole with two layups and a highlighted short iron, Clark hit a mediocre chip shot on the green and the rest is history. Vindication for Kisner.
(Also worth noting was Max Homa’s birdie putt on No. 13 that made it all possible.)
5. This play-off match has been fixed
It’s not quite Rory vs. Tiger, because Tiger is unlikely to play. (“Well, I’ll be here anyway,” he said, leaving the door open.) Anyway, it’s Rory McIlroy’s team versus Tiger Woods’ team; In two weeks the teams will be ready for a showdown in the semi-finals.
Four of TGL’s six teams make the playoffs, so this isn’t exactly a Cinderella story. But last year was a nightmare for the league when McIlroy’s Boston Common and Woods’ Jupiter Links were the two teams to miss the postseason.
This time they are ready for a confrontation.
What did this moment represent for Woods? He gave the perfect answer.
“Best indoor experience ever.”
In the meantime, back to real golf. But not bad for a Tuesday evening distraction…
