Tom Aspinall knows that his next fight will come from the winner of Alexander Volkov vs. Jilton Almeida on UFC 321 if he also wins on that card.
Aspinall will defend its heavyweight title in the main event of UFC 321 against Ciryl Gane. On the way to the game, Aspinall is a large -460 favorite, while the Frenchman is a +320 underdog Fanduel. Also on the UFC 321 card is a no. 1 candidate on heavyweight with Volkov who takes on Almeida.
Although the focus of Aspinall will be on Gane, he will pay a lot of attention to that fight. But he expects the Russian that his hand will be lifted to earn the next crack in his heavyweight belt.
“I actually thought Volkov won the fight against Gane, to be honest,” Aspinall said to Bloodways. “I think Volkov is in a really good form at the moment, I think Almeida is good. I have not seen enough of Almeida’s game to say how good he actually is. At the moment it is hard to say, but I would favor Volkov in that.”
Aspinall is not only in the opinion that Volkov should have made the decision on Gane in his last fight. So it could have been that they fight for the belt at UFC 321.
Tom Aspinall expects to combat the winner of Volkov-Almeida
But even though Tom Aspinall would already have a first round entry on Volkov, he believes that the Rematch would be the next.
“That is how I see it, and I think that is pretty clear,” Aspinall said when he was asked if the winner of Volkov-Almeida would get the next title shot.
Aspinall was promoted to the undisputed heavyweight champion after Jon Jones announced his retirement. He held the Interim -Riem since November 2023, when he scored a knockout victory over Sergei Pavlovich in the first round.
Aspinall is 15-3 as a pro and comes from a knockout victory over Curtis Blaydes to defend the interim belt. He is 8-1 in the UFC with his lonely loss when he tore his knee in the first fight against Blaydes.
