Aspinall is the reigning UFC heavyweight champion, but he is in limbo due to the condition of his eyes. Ciryl Gane accidentally stabbed Aspinall in the eye during their fight in October 2025 and the defending champion was unable to continue. Aspinall has since said he needed surgery on both of his eyes.
White’s initial comments about Aspinall’s eye problems drew the ire of the heavyweight champion. Aspinall got the impression that White was insinuating that he was looking for a way out against Gane.
During the UFC324 press conference after the fightWhite was asked for an update on Aspinall’s status. The UFC boss had quite the response.
“Oh Jesus,” White said. “Don’t make me talk about Tom Aspinall’s eye. Apparently he’s going for or just had his second surgery. By surgery I mean injections. I have no idea. Get a quote from him. God [expletive] forbid me to say anything about it.
There is no word on when Aspinall will be cleared to return to action. White and the UFC brass hoped Aspinall vs. Gane quickly rebooked, but the status of the heavyweight champion remains unclear.
It’s been tough sledding at the top of the UFC heavyweight division. There was a delay when UFC tried to book a title unification fight between Jon Jones and Aspinall, but that never materialized. Now the delay is due to Aspinall’s aforementioned eye problems.
The division continues. On last Saturday’s UFC 324 card, Waldo Cortes-Acosta scored a second-round TKO finish against Derrick Lewis. The No. 5-ranked UFC heavyweight could be a future opponent for both Aspinall and Gane if the stars align.
