At UFC 321, a double eye poke resulted in Tom Aspinall being unable to continue in his main event match against Ciryl Gane. As you can imagine, many fans were quite disappointed that a heavyweight title fight ended this way – and many even decided to throw shade in the champion’s direction for not going ahead.

It was a strange position to take, and at the post-fight press conference even Dana White said Aspinall ‘didn’t want’ to continue, and many took that as a shade on the Englishman.
In a recent update video, Aspinall said the following about the boss’ comments.
Aspinall responds to White’s post-UFC 321 criticism
“I didn’t pass, and I’ll tell you why I didn’t pass: because I’m not a dummy,” Aspinall said. “I’m not going to go out there and fight one of the best strikers in the world if I can’t see it. I know as an MMA fighter things will happen in the fight that will put you in danger.”
“Go back and look at my fight with Arlovski. At the end of the first round he hit me right in the eye. For the rest of the fight I couldn’t see him out of that eye. That’s fine. If you get punched or kicked in the eye, that’s fine. If you get a double-eye in both eyes and you have no vision because of a foul, why should I continue? So some dummy can look and say, ‘Oh yeah, Tom just got punched out’?
“I’m not going to fight if I can’t see because of a foul. If it’s a legal move, we have to fight through it. That’s what we do as fighters. But if it’s a foul, why am I going to endanger my health if I can’t see at all?”
