TLFG DAILY DIGEST

In the next section, I’ll list what I think are the standout games of the week and give some brief reasons for my choice. View the maps above for start times, ticket information and directions.

Monday February 16

Prime Minister of the Isthmian League

Aveley v Chichester City at 7.45pm – the week starts with a decent selection of non-league matches. First up we have this seventh tier game with the promotion chasing Millers. The Essex club sit second in the table and are in their best form over the last ten games, but are still a whopping 14 points behind leaders Folkestone Invicta. The visitors have won just one of their last six and should be beaten, but the sides last met two weeks ago and only a solitary goal got Aveley over the line. Tickets cost €14 at the gate

Quarter-final of the Isthmian League Cup

Redbridge v Crowborough Athletic at 7.45pm – we’re approaching the business end of this competition and these two eighth-tier clubs are the lowest-ranked teams left in it. The Motormen are aiming for promotion in the North Division and therefore have to start as favourites. The winners will play Wingate & Finchley in the semi-final. Tickets cost €10 at the gate

ECL Division 1 South

Barkingside v Hutton at 7.45pm – in the 10th level there is a game that affects both ends of the table, as the second bottom hosts the second top. The ‘Side’ are six points behind in terms of safety, but have two games left to play, so it’s not over yet, but they will do a great job to achieve something here. Tickets are available at the gate for approximately €7-8

Tuesday February 17

Championship

Charlton Athletic v Portsmouth at 7.45pm – two of the teams in the group just above the relegation zone meet in The Valley for a crucial match. The Addicks are unbeaten in three games and in better form, but lost the reverse fixture 2-1 at the end of December. The London games for Pompey are essentially derbies and I think they have sold out their allocation. Therefore, you must have a previous purchase history if you want to get tickets

League One

Leyton Orient v Plymouth Argyle at 7.45pm – with just two wins out of 10, the O’s are just one point above the relegation zone. Argyle recorded a stunning 4-0 win at Blackpool on Saturday and won 1-0 at Brisbane Road in the EFL Trophy a few months ago. Tickets

League Two

Barnet v Swindon Town at 7.45pm – There are two important matches in the fourth level in London on Tuesday. With just one defeat in ten games, the Bees have more than held their own since rejoining the EFL this summer. Third-placed Swindon suffered a surprise defeat to lowly Shrewsbury in their last game and will no doubt be looking to bounce back quickly. Tickets
Bromley v Cheltenham Town at 7.45pm – Ravens’ draw against Notts County on Saturday allowed Cambridge United to close the gap on the leaders to four points. With an almost identical goal difference, Bromley need some convincing wins and they could get them here. The Robins are in the lower reaches of the table and are winless in five. Tickets

National League

Sutton United v Woking at 7.45pm – the biggest non-league match of the evening is this Surrey derby at Gander Green Lane. With just two wins from 10, the U’s are back in the bottom four. However, they are only one point behind and have two games left to play. The Cards won 2-0 at Truro in their last match and are in the top half. Tickets

Semi-final of the National League Cup

Boreham Wood v Truro City at 7.30pm – I’ve been debating whether or not to include this game because it’s such an unpopular competition and both teams on either side of the table have much more important things to play for. If you’re not aware, this competition started last season as a sort of consolation prize for replays being removed from the FA Cup. Premier League academy teams will play National League teams in a group stage before the knockout rounds begin. Leeds United U21s are the reigning champions, but lost in the group stage this time. The winners of this tie will play against Tamworth or West Ham United U21 in the final. Tickets are £10, which is half the normal price at this location

National League South

Enfield Town v Horsham at 7.45pm – I went to this match a few seasons ago when both were in the Isthmian Premier. Now that they are both in the sixth tier, the clubs are experiencing different fortunes. The Towners are in trouble. Bottom of the division and winless in 10, things are looking pretty bleak. Horsham are not in much better form but they won the reverse fixture at Sussex in October 1-0. Tickets

Prime Minister of the Isthmian League

Wingate & Finchley v Potters Bar Town at 7.45pm – elsewhere in North London there is a big relegation six-pointer at Summers Lane. Following the tragic death of a Chichester player on their ground in September, Wingate played all their league matches for two months until changes were made to their stadium. Strangely enough, they won almost all of them and lost none to get into the promotion battle. They’ve won one in the three months since they came home. Now that they’re in the bottom four, they desperately need to reverse that trend and with PBT just below them in the table, now is the time to start. Tickets

Southern League Premier South

Hanwell Town v Farnham Town at 7.45pm – also in the seventh level we have another game that affects both sides of the table. I think this match has been postponed at least twice and with bad weather still forecast it could go ahead again. However, if it goes ahead you will see Geordies’ relegation-threatened battle against promotion candidates Farnham. Tickets

CCL Premier South

Tooting & Mitcham United v Abbey Rangers at 7.45pm – with Cobham a ridiculous 27 points ahead at the top, it’s now all about who joins them in the eighth tier via the play-offs. These two are both in the top four and need to keep winning to cement their place. Tickets cost €8 at the gate

Wednesday February 18

UEFA Women’s Champions League

Arsenal against OH Leuven at 8 p.m – the biggest crowd of the night should be at the Boreham Wood ground as the Gunners look to secure their place in the next stage of this competition. After winning the away match 4-0, the reigning champions should be feeling confident. If they advance, they will face old rivals Chelsea in the quarter-finals. Tickets

FAWNL Division 1 Southeast

Fulham v QPR at 7.45pm – there could also be a decent turnout at Craven Cottage for this big derby in the women’s game. The hosts are top and favorites to win this division after beating their nearest rivals Norwich City last week. They are also yet to lose a league match this season, but one of only two teams to take a point from them is QPR, who held them to a 1-1 draw earlier this season. The Rs are in fifth place and are realistically out of the promotion race, but they would love to throw a spanner in the works here. Tickets

Premier League International Cup

Crystal Palace vs Borussia Mönchengladbach at 7pm – the most notable men’s match of the evening takes place in this U21 competition at Sutton United’s pitch in South London. All group stage matches have been played except this one. It’s also important because the Eagles need to win to advance. They will also have to win by two or more goals to be sure. To make things a little more difficult, their opponents are currently at the top of this eight-team group, but it’s incredibly tight. If Palace win by two or more goals, Borussia will slide from first to third place and go out. Tickets are £5

Isthmian League South Central

Southall v Ascot United at 7.45pm – this relegation six-pointer in West London is Wednesday’s top-level non-league match. The ‘Allen are in the bottom three but only two points behind the visitors who sit just above the relegation line – a huge game for both. This match has been moved to Bedfont Sports and tickets cost around £10 at the gate

SCEFL Prime Minister

Erith & Belvedere vs Bearsted at 7.45pm – there are a few good options in the ninth level and I chose this during the ESL game at SOUL Tower Hamlets as it should get a bigger crowd and it is played on a real football pitch and not in an athletics stadium. The Deres are kept out of the play-off places by goal difference and Bearsted are one of the teams just ahead of them. Crucially, E&B have played more games than the teams immediately above them, so a loss here could be really damaging. Tickets cost €8 at the gate

Thursday February 19

FAWNL Division 1 Southeast

Actonians v London Bees at 7.45pm – the only senior match I know of on Thursday is this women’s match. The A’s are very inconsistent at the moment and they are settling into a new management team, but there is a big result on the cards and beating third place London Bees would certainly be impressive. The visitors are a bit up and down themselves, but come into this thanks to a solid 4-1 win over MK Dons. When the teams last met at The Hive at the end of October, the A’s were again looking to bounce back from a tough cup loss to Watford and won 2-1, so they know they can do it. This match is scheduled for North Greenford United but the pitch really struggles during wet spells and it could well be moved to somewhere like Rectory Park or Bedfont Sports. Tickets

Friday February 20

Essex Senior League

Woodford Town v Frenford at 7.45pm – the top tier match in London on Friday is this ninth tier match and I’m sorry to say it’s not exactly mouth-watering as there are two teams really struggling for form. Woodford have been in the promotion race at some point in recent years and again started very strongly, but three wins from 10 have seen them drop to eighth place. Still just four points off the play-off places, their season is certainly not over. They beat Romford last time out and will be hoping they can build some momentum as Frenford are bottom with just three wins all season. Tickets cost €7 at the gate
