The Minnesota Timberwolves are in an excellent position to stay one of the best performing teams in the Stacked Western Conference next season. At the moment their greatest fear is probably not something that is actually related to basketball. It is perhaps the far -fetched but not impossible reality where Anthony Edwards decides that he wants to play football in the NFL.
If you are aware of the education of Edwards, you know that long before he was one of the best basketball players in the world, a Pop Warner football player was in his youth. And Ant did not play alone, he dominated, making comparisons with a young Michael Vick. It is fair to say that football was his first love as an athlete.
Growing up in the American South, where football is extremely relevant culturally, it was logical that Edwards became involved in sport from a young age. But by the time he arrived in high school, Ant had already made the decision to turn full -time to basketball.
Towards the end of his career in high school when he received lectures and committed himself at the University of Georgia, there seemed to be no point that Edwards were pursuing a professional football career. But that does not mean that it was still not in the back of his head.
Last year Ant’s famous trash bin led him to make a statement about the differences between professional basketball and football players. “Football players cannot play basketball,” he told Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson. “Really not. I told my friends, I said,” If I win a ring for the next three to four years, I will play football. ”
Anthony Edwards have spoken about playing in the NFL several times
Jefferson tried to call his bluff, but Edwards insisted that he wasn’t rumbling. If you are a real die-hard Minnesota sports fan and like to see a unique crossover between your favorite teams, you would probably be pretty excited to hear this. But I feel that most Timberwolves fans want to throw this thought as a pure fantasy and don’t think anything about it anymore.
I say that for two reasons. Of which the first is the enormous injury risk that is accompanied by playing tackle football. You could claim that there is no sport that does more to break down the bodies of athletes for several years, especially on a professional level.
Then the second reason is the fact that taking one or more years free of basketball would have the potential to seriously harm its growth and development on hardwood. He could still come back and beat again after a short hypothetical football career, but it’s hard to think that he would look as sharp as he did before taking a break. It would at least take the time to anchor again to the NBA.
No matter how strange it sounds, this is not a concept that is completely strange in the world of professional sports. Michael Jordan, who of course made comparisons, shocked the sports world when he withdrew from basketball to play baseball in 1993. The circumstances were different, but it was a similar transition. At the time, Jordan was the biggest basketball player on the planet, but his skills did not also translate into the baseball diamond.
So that is another perspective to consider it too. I think we all respect the athletic skills of Edwards, but the NFL is simply not the same as the NBA. I am not saying that Ant would not succeed, but you should think that it would be an important adjustment period for him to get comfortable with receiver or really a position at a high level in the NFL.
Are we somewhere near this scenario that actually unfolds, rather than just in theory? Probably not. The dedication of Anthony Edwards to the Timberwolves is Solid. But the fact that he plagued the idea means that it is something that should be on the radar of fans, especially if Minnesota wins a championship.
