Tim Weah enjoyed a positive return to Ligue 1 on Friday, three years after performing on the world’s biggest stage.
Weah scored his first league goal of the season for Marseille in a 5–1 win over Nice. The US men’s national team winger/fullback helped Roberto De Zerbi’s side reach the top of the table with the result.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put the visitors ahead after eleven minutes before Mason Greenwood doubled Marseille’s lead before half-time.
Greenwood extended Marseille’s lead to 3-0 in the 53rd minute before Weah emphatically added his name to the scoresheet. Weah collected possession on the right side of the Nice box before drilling a right-footed rocket into the top left corner.
It was his second goal of the season in all competitions.
Mohamed Ali-Cho scored a consolation goal for Nice after an hour, but Marseille would make it 5-1 via Igor Paixao’s insurance.
Weah played the full 90 minutes at right back, making his twelfth appearance of the season.
The 25-year-old will certainly have fond memories of November 21 after scoring the USMNTs first goal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in a 1-1 group stage draw against Wales.
Marseille will next host Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League at the Orange Velodrome on Tuesday evening.
