Tilak Verma OUT! Shreyas Iyer IN! Here is the update of the Indian squad for the last two T20Is against New Zealand

Shreyas Iyer will remain part of the Indian squad for the rest of the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Tuesday. The update comes as Tilak Varma continues his recovery from injury and is now only expected to return to the national side ahead of India’s warm-up for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

India has already done that sealed the five-match T20I series with an emphatic 3-0 leadbut team management has chosen to maintain continuity in the squad as preparations for the global event starting on February 7 intensify.

BCCI confirms Tilak Varma’s gradual recovery plan

In an official statement, the BCCI provided clarity on Tilak’s rehabilitation timeline, confirming that the southpaw is making steady progress at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru. However, the board recognized that Tilak needs additional time to regain full match fitness.

ā€œTilak Varma is making steady progress with his rehabilitation at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru,ā€ read the statement. ā€œHowever, he will need additional time to regain full fitness and will not be available for the final two T20Is of the ongoing five-match IDFC First Bank T20I series.ā€

The board further added that Tilak will join the Indian squad on February 3 in Mumbai once he fully recovers, in time for the team’s warm-up match ahead of the T20 World Cup.

The selection committee backs Shreyas Iyer as his replacement

With Tilak unavailable for the rest of the series, the Men’s Selection Committee has recommended it Shreyas Iyer continues as his replacement. Although Iyer has not featured in a match so far, his presence provides depth and experience as India manage the workload and complete combinations.

Despite being included in the squad, Iyer has had to wait for an opportunity, with India preferring to test other options after clinching the series early. The decision reflects the team’s broader strategy of balancing preparation and experimentation before a major tournament.

The Indian team management has instead opted to give extended opportunities to Ishan Kishan, who has returned to international cricket after almost two years away. Ishan has been given a point in the batting order as part of India’s planning for the World Cup.

Explaining the decision before the series started, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav said the move was based on fairness and long-term planning. “We picked him first for the World Cup squad, so it’s only fair that he gets the chance first. He hasn’t played for India for a long time either. He deserves to play going forward,” Suryakumar had said.

Injury setback and race against time for Tilak

Tilak Varma suffered an abdominal injury while representing his state in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. At the time, medical advice suggested surgery, effectively ruling him out of the T20I series against New Zealand and raising concerns about his availability for the T20 World Cup.

The injury made his recovery a race against time, but the latest update from the BCCI suggests cautious optimism. By delaying his return until he is fully fit, India appear to want to avoid any risk of aggravation ahead of a demanding tournament.
