After completing his duties for India in the South African T20I series, where he smashed a pair of half-centuries to help India cross the line, he returned to lead Hyderabad in the 2025-2026 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He played two matches, the first against Chandigarh where he scored a century, and then followed that up with a 34 against Bengal.
After the January 6 match, Tilak started feeling pain and was immediately advised to undergo scans. This seemed like a huge blow to the Indian contingent ahead of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.

Tilak Varma heads to CoE with hopes of India’s return during the NZ series
The left-handed batsman has been the backbone of the Indian middle-overs in the past year. His injury devastated India, although it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for senior player Shreyas Iyer, who made his long-awaited comeback in the shortest format.
According to TOI, the young cricketer left for the BCCI Center of Excellence on Tuesday and is currently not feeling any pain. He goes to the CoE to seek permission after a fitness test is conducted. He accelerates his return with a return targeting the fourth match against New Zealand.
“If all goes well, he will be fit before the fourth T20I on January 28 in Visakhapatnam. He has resumed physical training and will take up batting and other skill-based activities in a day or two,” a source told TOI.
