TikTok is now the leading news source for young people

Where do young people get their news? The same app that brought us sailor songs and dance challenges.

Forty-three percent of 18- to 29-year-olds say they will regularly get news from TikTok by 2025, compared to 41 percent for both YouTube and Facebook and 40 percent for Instagram, according to new data from the Pew Research Center. The video app has been on a tear in recent years. Only 32 percent called it a regular news source in 2023.

Social media beats every other format for news consumption: 76 percent of young adults say they often or sometimes receive news from social media, compared to 60 percent for news websites and 28 percent for email newsletters. TikTok’s rise comes as the platform faces constant scrutiny for data privacy and its Chinese parent company ByteDance.
