Malloy, a sixth-round pick of the Braves in 2021, was traded to Detroit in exchange for reliever after his first full minor league season Joe Jimenez. Prospect evaluators praised Malloy’s batting discipline but wondered if he would find a home defensively. The positional fit remains the biggest problem. Malloy was called up as a third baseman but was well below average there. Detroit used him as a full-time corner outfielder in 2024 and split his time between the corner outfield and first base last season.
Malloy, 26 in February, is a below-average runner and athlete, so the hope is he’ll be sufficient somewhere. There is a high bar to clear offensively if he is limited to first base or a full-time designated hitter role. Malloy hasn’t been close to that in his scattered MLB opportunities, as he is a .209/.311/.346 hitter in 357 career plate appearances.
The big league numbers are likely under pressure due to his lack of consistent playing time. Malloy has been a fantastic offensive player in the minor leagues. He has an OPS of nearly .900 in his minor league career, including a .296/.424/.478 line in more than 1,200 plate appearances against Triple-A pitching.
Malloy has decent power and hit 23 home runs in Triple-A a few seasons ago. The calling card is an extremely patient, offensive approach that has allowed him to work in the minors at a huge 17.2%. Major League pitchers will be able to challenge him better within the strike zone, but Malloy has still posted a 12% walk rate from his MLB work. That comes with an increased strikeout rate of 32.8%, which he needs to bring down if he wants to fill a long-term role.
Tampa Bay has Yandy Diaz And Jonathan Aranda lined up for first base and DH playing time. There are more opportunities in the outfield if the Rays think Malloy can be a decent defender on the grass. Otherwise, he would be ticketed for a depth role, either as a bench bat or stashed away at Triple-A Durham. Malloy has two minor league options remaining, giving the team some roster flexibility, although he doesn’t have much to prove against minor league pitching.
