Right -handed Tyler Owens has again signed with the Tigers for a minor League deal, reports Evan Woodbery from Mlive Media Group. Detroit recently released Owens, but the two parties are quickly reunited.
Owens, 24, was appointed a week ago for assignment when the Tigers were acquired Rafael Montero. The moment he was appointed for assignment, Owens was on the injured list of the Minor League because of a hip injury. Teams are not allowed to place injured players on outright distance statements. As soon as Owens was in DFA Limbo, the club had to trade it or release him.
They finally went with the last option. Owens had a few days to fill the interest of all 30 clubs, but decided to return to the Tigers on a new pact, a fairly common series of events in such situations. He can stay in a familiar place, while the Tigers can keep the player without confiscating a schedule.
Owens had a limited record of the Major League. Earlier this year he made his debut in the big league by throwing three innings for Detroit, making one earned run possible. His recent Minor League numbers have been solid. From the beginning of 2023 to the present, he threw 147 1/3 innings on the farm with a 3.73 earned run average, 23.1% strikeout percentage, 9.4% running speed and grounders on about half of the balls he granted.
