Three runs: Jets handed its fourth shutout loss of the season

Momentum. What’s with the Winnipeg Jets? It’s stringing together wins and ultimately building a win streak to pull themselves back into a playoff spot. But after collecting three of a possible four points in their previous two games, the Jets were bowled out 1-0 by Manitoban goalkeeper Joel Hofer and the St. Louis blues on Wednesday evening.

Justin Faulk scored the game’s lone goal in the second period, his eighth of the season. Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves in his third consecutive start as Winnipeg fell to 15-16-2 on the year.

Slow start, again

The Jets were outplayed for most of the opening period. St. Louis had a 9-1 advantage in shots at one point and generated several high-danger scoring opportunities, a few of which hit the iron. Hellebuyck stayed up and kept the match scoreless for twenty minutes.

“I don’t think our starts have been great. Definitely something we need to work on,” Kyle Connor said after the game. “It’s one shift on, one shift off. It feels like it’s been going on for a long time, almost a month. It’s not the way we want to play, and it keeps happening. We have to find a way to get out of it.”

Discipline

Last season, the Jets were known for their discipline and avoiding early penalties. That hasn’t been the case this year, and Wednesday in St. Louis was another example.

With 1-0 down and 2:54 remaining in the third period, Dylan DeMelo was sent to the penalty box for tripping Jake Neighbors. Winnipeg killed the penalty, but with 42 seconds left, chaos erupted behind the Jets’ net soon after. Josh Morrissey and Pius Suter traded pushes before Logan Stanley checked Suter from behind, putting Winnipeg in the lurch again. Stanley was assessed a gross minor and a 10-minute misconduct for the untimely foul. St. Louis would run out the clock and hold on for the shutout victory.

Logan Stanley wanted none of that

Toews plays game 1,100

Jonathan Toews skated in his 1,100th NHL game against the Blues, becoming the 27th active player to reach the milestone.

Toews logged 11:26 of ice time, registered one shot on goal and shot 81.8 percent in the faceoff point.

The Jets now go to Denver to take on the league leader Colorado avalanche on Friday evening. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00 PM CST on TSN3.
