Saturday’s match ended with Manchester City 2 Newcastle 1.
Before each game, we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives after the game.
Plenty to talk about after this Manchester City match!
A match that ebbed and flowed as both teams threatened, with United unlucky enough to come away with nothing.
On this occasion it is ‘Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey…’:
POSITIVE
Decent performance
Losing is so frustrating, but haven’t we given a very good image of ourselves?
Despite the jetlag, that was our best performance at the Etihad for years, and there couldn’t have been too many complaints had we found a second equalizer, especially after an even better performance in the second half.
The huge celebration from the home fans at the final whistle showed what it meant to them.
There is always the cup
This isn’t a cliché, at least not this time.
We’ll be playing this at St James’ Park in the fifth round of the FA Cup in two weeks’ time.
Although we don’t get anything at the Etihad, we have only lost twice in our last six meetings with Man City where we have had home advantage.
We have a lot to thank and I support us to progress to the quarter-finals.
Lewis Hall
Okay, it took a little deflection, but what an attack from young Lewis.
He keeps getting better. What a performance, take note Tommy Tuchel.
NEGATIVES
Varcian
I thought big Dan Burn had us level.
He is then judged to be offside, but only because he was pushed into an offside position by Dias just before the ball was played.
It feels unfair that a defender can force his opponent into an offside position in a way that would normally be a foul, but is not punished for it.
Baffling… even more so when I watched the edited highlights this morning and none were there, the incident seemed to have been erased from the history books
Guardiola again
The Man City manager, who has consistently been able to acquire the best talent during his tenure and with apparent impunity, made an inappropriate dig at Newcastle United, referring to how we have improved since ‘Saudi Arabia took over the club’.
A cheap shot, made without a hint of irony.
Could he have done the job that Eddie Howe has done with what is admittedly not insignificant, but let’s be honest, only a fraction of the resources the Catalan has had at his disposal over the years?
I don’t think so.
Leaving Etihad empty-handed (again).
Another defeat at Man City’s stadium was donated which had been built with public money at a cost of over £100 million and converted to house football matches, with a further £30 million of public money funded in the aftermath of the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Seventeen consecutive league defeats at this venue. Will this dismal run ever end?
