Three long-term absentees return to Wrexham training as Phil Parkinson confirms injury latest news: The72 – Football League News

Wrexham have had Jay Rodriguez, Andy Cannon and Danny Ward back on the grass as they ramp up their recovery from injuries, Phil Parkinson confirmed this.

Wrexham are starting to settle into the Championship after disappointing early form. The Red Dragons are unbeaten in six games and recently played out a goalless draw with promotion candidates Ipswich Town.

It is good reading for Phil Parkinson and co, now that the pressure to perform increases from League One. However, the boss has suffered some notable injuries.

Jay Rodriguez has been out since preseason with a foot problem, Andy Cannon has been sidelined since suffering ACL damage in February, and Danny Ward suffered a serious elbow injury in August. But now Parkinson has confirmed this BBC Sports that the Wrexham trio have been back on the grass in their attempts to rebuild fitness.

“We’ve had Rodriguez and Andy Cannon, Danny Ward was involved again, Danny just to a lesser extent,” he said. “But it was good to get those guys out and into the group this week and at the end of last week.”

The competition in the Wrexham squads will only increase as the trio return

Wrexham have recruited extensively throughout their journey from the National League to the Championship. They have done well and every year they have looked for upgrades to help manage the step up.

It has led to many changes within the team, but it does mean that there is a lot of depth. The first XI is certainly Championship caliber, with most of the players on the bench playing a key role in the rise from League One.

Welcoming Rodriguez, Cannon and Ward to the forefront will only help that. The former two are yet to feature this season due to their injuries, but the latter had Arthur Okonkwo as the starting goalkeeper before injury struck.

When Ward returns, he will be determined to regain that spot. He won’t be able to play until January after being ruled out due to his injury, but once he is fit again his recovery is highly likely and he will then be free to challenge for his place.

Could Jay Rodriguez and Andy Cannon’s Wrexham futures be up in the air?

While Ward is expected to fight for his spot, Rodriguez and Cannon’s situations could be slightly different. Such is the size of the squad and the depth in midfield and attack that they could struggle to get back into the Wrexham team.

Veteran forward Rodriguez has Kieffer Moore, Sam Smith, Josh Windass and Nathan Broadhead in contention for minutes. Ryan Hardie is also on the books but has been touted with a January move amid his struggle for playing time.

Of Ben Sheafwhile George Dobson, Lewis O’Brien, George Thomason, Ollie Rathbone and Matt James are all slated to feature in central midfield, it could be tricky to fit Cannon into the 25-man squad as well.

It means both could be contenders for winter getaways. They will be determined to prove their eligibility before then in case the door swings open to play elsewhere.

The duo could attract interest from rivals in the Championship or possibly at the top of League One.
