Birmingham City are looking to add a handful of players to their ranks in January, including a central midfielder.
Birmingham City have had a mixed season so far, finishing 13th in the Championship. This would be a great position for most newly promoted teams, but BCFC is no ordinary newly promoted team.
The Blues have big ambitions and have the talent to challenge for promotion this season. Chris Davis will feel his side can really attack the second half of the campaign with a handful of signings.
And ahead of the January transfer window, it has been reported that three signings are wanted. Some cover is needed at left back, another option at striker is being considered and a new central midfielder is also on the shopping list.
That said, we’ve highlighted three midfield players that Birmingham City should consider as potential targets for January…
Jamie Roche – Laussane Sport
Starting with a slightly more leftfield option, Jamie Roche could be perfect for Birmingham City. At 191cm tall and with great strength and stamina, he could be the midfield powerhouse that has been missing since Tomoki Iwata’s switch to right-back.
Roche is 24 and has been working at Swiss Laussane Sport since 2023. He made his breakthrough in his native Sweden and has since made leaps and bounds by tasting European football in the UEFA Conference League.
Roche may not break the bank and could be an instant starter for BCFC. He has the physical attributes to add power to this side and succeed in England.
Dan Neil – Sunderland
Birmingham City could be one of many clubs eyeing Dan Neil as a potential January target. Sunderland’s promotion-winning captain has barely played in the Premier League and may be looking to leave for more playing time.
Although he is slightly shorter and lighter in stature, Neil still has a good physical level. He is a versatile midfielder with a long passing range and the duel determination required at St. Andrew’s.
This could be a winter loan deal for the Blues, with the scope of something longer term in the summer.
And Neil’s Sunderland stats
Andy Irving – West Ham United
Last but not least is Andy Irving, who has reportedly attracted interest from Wrexham as he prepares to move away from West Ham. The Scot has found a handful of first-team opportunities, but if he wants to play every week, a drop to the Championship could be beneficial.
Irving is perhaps the most progressive of the three midfielders presented, but he has the size and frame to bring the desired strength to Birmingham City’s midfield.
It is unlikely the Hammers will demand much to let him go. It could be a smart deal for BCFC, allowing them to spend more elsewhere.
