Saudi Arabia is the home of the world’s largest construction site, known as the Neom Mega project, but the impressive workforce can experience a major setback.

The project saw the introduction of consultancy firms, introduced by the Public Investment Fund to assess the feasibility of the project. It came at a time when civil servants struggled with economic stress that has the potential to see the reduction of the power on the site.

The NEOM project largely consists of ‘The Line’, an urban development of 105 miles, which serves as the cornerstone of the economic diversification agenda of the region for 2030. With objectives to accommodate 9 million people, the line is an ultimate ultramodern, zero emission environment that reduces the relevance of the area on oil.

Although now, as the costs escalate and lower oil income, this construction process has been slower and the entire project is in danger. The Public Investment Fund has started an assessment process that can not only cause damage to the staff, but also hinders Saudi Arabia’s ambitions, because it tries to reinvent its image to the rest of the world.

According to Semafor, the sources at Neom took into account the idea of lowering the figures within the workforce after the advisory process. Part of this is the relocation of more than 1,000 employees to Riyadh in an attempt to control rising costs.

At present, thousands of employees, 2,800 to be precise, are housed on the construction site, where they live in customized accommodation. This was set up to prevent them from commuting through the hard desert conditions every day.

The spokesperson for Neom Sahar al-Anbar went to LinkedIn to share: “Change can be a challenge, but in the first place, let’s see that Neom is more than just a development project; it represents an ambitious national vision that is an important part of the development strategy of Saudi Arabia.

“These actions are actually reassuring and reflecting responsible management. By re -assessing the allocation of resources, NEOM uses a proactive approach to stay in accordance with its ambitious long -term objectives.”

It is not a surprise for many, because Neom has fought against many accusations to mistreat their employees. Last October, an ITV documentary revealed that an alleged 21,000 foreign employees in fact had lost their lives as part of the Saudi Arabia projects, with more than 100,000 missing since 2017.

Currently, employees live at the construction site, where tailor -made accommodation has been placed to ensure that employees do not have to commute in the desert every day. From April, around 2,800 employees were housed on the site, said the Neom website.

“Finally, it is important to note that meals, schools, household service, etc., is provided as part of the external site reimbursement policy and are not standard benefits. Employees still receive their current wage packages when moving to Riyad.”
