With a huge part of their wing player from last season, the Edmonton Oilers will go to 2025-26 with a new-look Forward group. Out are veterans with a track record of scoring goals. In is youth, speed and potential. The stars will do their thing, but who will contribute even more to replacing the target production that went elsewhere in the summer?
More specifically, who has a real chance to hit the 20 goal?
Certain things
Leon Draisaitl remains the best goal scorer of the team. He is one of the best scorers in the competition, together with Auston Matthews and Alex Ovechkin. He will easily score 20 goals and will probably get close to the 40 or 50 target mark.
Zach Hyman is another obvious candidate. Even from wrist operation and entering his age-33 season, he is remarkably consistent in Edmonton, on average 38 goals per 82 games. If he is healthy, it is almost automatic.
If Connor McDavid decides to shoot, he will hit 20 without any problems. He placed 26 last season, but that was a low point for him when it comes to placing the puck in the net.
The best bet among newcomers
Andrew Mangiapane seems ready to have a solid season alongside elitental talent. Slot to play with McDavid or Draisaitl, the 28-year-old wing player has 20 goal potential if he recovers after a dip in Washington. With a strong pre-check-up and a nose in front of the net, he could easily return to his pace 2021-22 (35 goals with Calgary).
Matt Savoie and Isaac Howard are the best Rookie bets. I will predict one of them scores 20, but not necessarily both. Whoever gets it depends on which player early chemistry develops in the top six. The person who does not do that is probably linked to a bottom-six role.
The breakout candidates
Vasily Podkolzin should benefit from more opportunities and trust in his second full oilers season. The knock on him is that he does not have the hands to be a strong NHL -Finisher. That said, he scored eight goals with inconsistent use last year. If he sticks to a top-six role, a jump to 15-20 goals is not far-fetched-especially with his aggressive style.
The prediction is that he will just fall short.
Trent Frederic, if healthy, could hit the middle of the teenage years, but 20 can be a range. The oilers see potential in him and sign the attacker for an eight -year extension. They believe that he is upside down that was not visible because of an injury after he arrived after last season’s deadline.
Total number of oilers of 20 goals
Draisaitl, McDavid and Hyman make three. Adding mangiapane gives the oilers four. Thinking that one of Howard, Savoie, Podkolzin or Frederic can get there, the team offers five. That should be enough, and there is always a surprising candidate such as Ryan Ngent-Hopkins. He needs a bounce back season.
