Thomas Tuchel’s England extension silences Eddie Howe’s speech

Thomas Tuchel’s England extension silences Eddie Howe’s speech

The FA has announced an extension of Thomas Tuchel’s contract as England manager.

The former Chelsea boss was originally signed on an 18-month contract in January 2025.

That deal would expire after the 2026 World Cup final.

I’m not sure why this wasn’t done before, but now, just four months before this summer’s World Cup, the FA announced this extension.

Thomas Tuchel now has a contract that runs until the 2028 European Championship.

Considering England won all eight World Cup qualifiers, scoring 22 goals and conceding none, there really wasn’t much more he could have done.

Thomas Tuchel has also taken charge of two friendlies so far: a 3-0 win over Wales and a 3-1 defeat to Senegal.

Tuchel says yes “Loved every minute so far” and is “very happy and proud” to continue in the role.

The English boss says he “I didn’t hesitate for a moment when I was asked to continue in this dream job.”

St James’ Park will be one of the stadiums where England will play in the 2028 European Championship final, as long as the team progresses as expected.

Thomas Tuchel says today that: “Euro 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach you want nothing more than to compete with the very best on the biggest stage possible.”

Thomas Tuchel will take England to the World Cup finals this summer, where the country will be in a group with Croatia, Ghana and Panama.

A bonus of today’s announcement is that it will silence any talk surrounding Eddie Howe and the England job, at least for the next few years.

Had the Newcastle United boss shown any interest, Eddie Howe would certainly have been the FA’s choice when Gareth Southgate left the job. However, with Eddie Howe fully committed to United, that was never possible. But that didn’t stop the media endlessly linking him with the England job.

With no obvious homegrown candidate, the FA was forced to look abroad and Thomas Tuchel was a good choice. Unless you believe that even if there was no obvious homegrown candidate, they were still obliged to choose someone who is English.
