Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.
Early extension is a golf swing killer. When your hips push toward the ball during the downswing, nothing good will happen. It’s a swing flaw that many recreational players struggle with, and one that can destroy your consistency if not handled properly.
If you’re experiencing premature renewal, don’t worry: you’re not alone. Need proof? Just look at how many results appear when you search for a drug on Google. Suffice it to say, it’s a popular topic.
If you’ve come across this article, it’s safe to assume you’re one of the many struggling with the condition. The good news is that we have a hunch that can help you heal it, and that’s courtesy of one of the best instructors around, GOLF Top 100 teacher Joe Plecker. Check it out below.
A feeling to resolve early extension
So we all know that early extension occurs when the hips move direction the ball during the downswing. The key to eliminating it is to stop that motion as you swing.
Plecker has a great drill for this and he calls it the Trail Foot Torque Drill.
Setting up the drill is easy. All you need is a slider (or a paper plate) to place under your trail foot. Once you have everything set up, swing back to the top and begin your downswing. However, when you get about halfway, stop swinging and push your foot behind you.
When you do this, you won’t be able to hip thrust toward the ball, and you’ll be forced to get your weight and pressure properly on your lead side. Additionally, this feeling of pushing your trail foot back will help create more torque (and power) in your swing.
If you are someone who has a chronic habit of prematurely lengthening, give this exercise a try. If you can implement feel into your swing, you’ll quickly eliminate early extension and hit the ball better than ever before.
