CNET’s key insights

  • No robot vacuum cleaner has truly solved the challenge of cleaning multiple levels without having to physically move it between floors.
  • This robo-vac can do it, for the pricier price of $1,600.
  • You won’t find another robot vacuum cleaner with its features for less than $1,000 right now.
  • It also earned our lab award for best cleaning coverage, covering 83.8% of our test area.

The primary purpose of owning a robot vacuum cleaner is to eliminate the need for manual cleaning. But that was never the case in my house – partly because of what I call my ‘Ikea chair challenge’. I’ve seen many robovacs stuck to the underside of one of my chairs, which has an unusually shaped base. It’s just one of the many obstacles in my house, which is also filled with pet hair, paw prints, and three teenage sons leaving things everywhere.

The robot vacuum cleaner is named after the name Dreame X50 Ultra CNET’s Best for Obstacles and PetsI was able to see how it performed in real conditions at my home.

Well, it conquered the Ikea chair. It was actually quite entertaining to watch the Dreame

My experience with the Dreame X50 Ultra robot vacuum cleaner

In terms of performance, the Dreame X50 Ultra was solid overall. It started with a full, deep cleaning and then vacuumed and mopped during the second run. While setting up the app I told him I had pets, so during the first run he emptied the trash can several times. I thought it was pretty smart to lift the mops while I vacuumed the carpet.

It took 2 hours and 3 minutes to complete the work around my house. The mop function was surprisingly effective, tackling muddy paw prints on my vinyl plank floor as well as I could with a stick mop. And I was particularly impressed with the object avoidance; it navigated around shoes, cords, and even my two dogs with no problem.

Setting up was a piece of cake. The app was intuitive and the quality of the machine’s construction felt sturdy, although with so many moving parts (like the extra climbing arms and lowering tower) I doubt its long-term durability.

One key feature that stood out was the tangle-free roller. In my home test, where I compared the Dreame X50 to my older Roborock Q5 after cleaning a large rug, the difference was striking. The Roborock was clogged with hair, while the roller of the Dreame was completely clean. This is a huge advantage over competitors, who often struggle with pet hair. This is another one of my big tests – I call it my “Great Pyrenees Challenge” – and the Dreame X50 passed with flying colors.

My family quickly got used to having it lying around, and it almost became another member of the household: quirky and sometimes a little confused, but generally helpful. In the end, it wasn’t just effective watching him overcome obstacles like the base of my Ikea chair, where other robots get stuck. It was actually fun to watch.

The Dreame X50 Ultra is feature-rich, ideal for pets, obstacles and object avoidance. It’s best if you want advanced navigation and mopping, and are willing to pay extra for features like the climbing arms and lowering tower. However, it’s not the absolute best at pure vacuuming, especially on carpets, and the software can be a bit quirky. The good news, however, is that Dreame is making the technology more affordable, with the threshold-hopping ability filtering down to other models, including the new Aqua 10 series and L40s Ultra series.

At its full price of around $1,600, the Dreame X50 Ultra is a very expensive robot vacuum. If you value its unique features such as climbing ability and advanced furniture navigation, then it could be worth the investment. However, if your primary concern is pure suction or you have a more limited budget, there are options more cost-effective options. It is a luxury product and the value matches the premium features.

For better carpet vacuuming performance and a lower price, the Ecovacs Deebot T30S or the iRobot Roomba Combo J7 Plus performed better in carpet and pet hair tests during CNET’s lab tests. Although all three have vacuum and mop functions, the Ecovacs Deebot T30S ($1,400, including stick vacuum) or the iRobot Roomba Combo J7 ($600) are cheaper than the full-price Dreame X50 Ultra. However, it’s worth pointing out that the Dreame X50 Ultra is one of the few robot vacuum cleaners we tested at CNET with the ability to climb over objects, overcome spaces and lower himself under furniture.
