The Toyota Hilux has earned its reputation as one of the strongest vehicles in the world. However, you don’t normally think of them as fast vehicles. The team at Mighty Car Mods is working to change that. Their third-generation Hilux is a tire-smoking, turbo-flapping monster.
Mighty Car Mods found the truck for sale online. The previous owner has already applied the beautiful paintwork. All Mighty Car Mods had to do was… change a lot of things. If you want to destroy tires in a fun way, you need strength.
From the factory, the engine in this Hilux probably produced less than 100 hp. Marty and Moog traded in a 2.7-liter four-cylinder 2TR engine from a later model Hilux. By itself, the mill is good for about 160 hp. However, it breathes easier due to the added turbocharger.
From there, the guys went a little crazy, adding bigger brakes, a front-mounted intercooler, a custom 3-inch exhaust, a custom driveshaft, and a limited-slip rear differential. A Haltech ECU controls the brains of this truck, which is important because the Hilux uses a drive-by-wire Subaru accelerator.
Once Moog finishes explaining the work, he starts the truck and goes for a ride. There is a lot of turbo noise and rumbling from the wastegate. Clearly the truck has quite a bit more power now. But the moment that makes it clear how much fun this truck actually is is when Moog throws it into the drift and laughs his head off. That laughter tells you everything you need to know.
These types of constructions are a lot of fun. You take something relatively mundane and give it new life as a vehicle ready to smile and laugh. And this one certainly qualifies as a serious sleeper.
People tend to overuse that term a bit. But this turbocharged Toyota Hilux meets the requirements. What was probably once an old workhorse now shines with its brilliant color scheme, glorious sounds and smoke-filled burnouts on command.
