This is the biggest problem holding Newcastle United back

We wanted to get a snapshot of what Newcastle United fans think.

Three months into the season and seventeen games played in three competitions so far.

Now in the November international break, Newcastle United fans will see their team win eight games, draw three and lose six.

These results summarize a start to the season with many ups and downs.

Plenty to talk about when we ask some of Newcastle United’s regular/irregular contributors to The Mag to give us their thoughts on the season so far, plus what will happen as we move forward.

Next up is GToon answering the questions.

Three words to describe how you currently feel as a Newcastle fan?

Hopeful, resigned, angry

Three words to describe Newcastle United now?

Underperforming, tired, aimless

Alexander Isak – Time to forgive and forget…?

I was genuinely surprised at his attitude towards us and his desire to move to that club.

I really don’t think he understands that he was playing with ten other players and that the team was set up to create opportunities for him. He is a very good player, but he is not particularly strong or injury-free and I don’t think he will achieve his specific dreams at that club.

Ekitike is by far the better player and every time I look at him I wish we had sold Isak sooner and bought him instead.

If you had to choose. A win against Sunderland but losing to Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, or losing to Sunderland and progressing to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup?

Defeat them. We will beat Fulham too. That many games are our biggest games this season. We have to win.

Would winning the Carabao Cup this season BUT finishing outside the top six of the Premier League be a success or a failure?

All things considered, I think that would be fine.

The top six are only about money.

The most important thing for us is a larger site.

Everything else will fall into place once that happens. Once the revenue starts flowing, we can compete regardless of league position, just like Manyoo.

By hand: What’s your best guess (not a hope!) of where Newcastle United will finish this season in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup, how well they will realistically do in each of these?

EPL – I expect a decent run once Wissa gets itself in order. I’d say 6th.

Champions League – last 8 and then controversially eliminated.

FA Cup – eliminated in the 3rd round.

League Cup – winners!!! Yes, I think we will win it again.

In order: which six NUFC players have been the most impressive so far this 2025/26 season?

Woltemade – absolute class from big Nick. He has proven to be a real top player. He will be a star for us.
Thiaw – a real footballing defender, just like Schar
Bruno, Bruno, Bruno! Leader, captain, fool!
Burn – gives his all, no matter what is asked of him. What a head!!
Tonali – even when he’s bad, he’s still great. The best player we have.
Murphy – the supply line

Which six NUFC players do you think will have proven to be the best players by the end of the 2025/26 season?

Woltemade, Tonali, Hall, Thiaw, Ramsdale, Bruno

Eight months ago, Eddie Howe lifted Newcastle’s first trophy in 56 years, and two months later secured a second Champions League qualification in three years. Some Newcastle fans now appear to be questioning his stance. What do you think of Eddie Howe and how much time has he deserved to get his league position in order and beyond, or not?

In recent seasons I have been critical of Eddie and asked questions about whether he can adapt, whether he can learn and improve. The tactical change that won us the League Cup was a masterpiece. It answered every question. He completely outsmarted the chosen champion.

Once again, Eddie has had a difficult start to the season due to things beyond his control. I support him doing well this season, but I would like him to be a little more ruthless with underperforming players at times.

What do you think of how the summer transfer window was handled by Newcastle United?

It went from terrible to desperate to okay. TBH the jury is still out, because we haven’t seen Wissa play yet and that needs to happen as soon as possible!

Thiaw and Big Nick really impressed. Ramsey and Ramsdale need a chance and Elanga needs to relax a bit. I’d like to see Elanga paired with Nick, a bit like Shearer and Bellamy. It would be nice to see us ditch the 433 every now and then.

How much do you think the fact that Newcastle United had no CEO or sporting director contributed to NUFC only signing one player (Elanga) who had a good pre-season?

It was a huge impact. Eddy can’t do everything. We needed these positions to function well in the modern game. Cloughie wanted to do it all, but I don’t think Eddie does. He is a coach and manager, not a board member.

What is your assessment of how each of the six summer signings will be rated after they have all finished their careers at Newcastle United? In any case – Thiaw, Ramsdale, Ramsey, Woltemade, Elanga and Wissa should be seen as one of three choices – A success, OK done, Failure.

I think each one will be a success. They are all very good players and will one day get their chance. I hope Ramsdale gets a run of games and hopefully Wissa doesn’t go to the AFCON. Is that why Eddie says he needs a preseason? Maybe it’s to suggest he’s not ready to go yet.

What do you see as three positive things for Newcastle United so far this season?

Woltemade is a huge positive, just like Thiaw. The cup matches were very positive, with some dominant performances. The support from Wor Flags was great too.

What do you think are the three negative things for Newcastle United so far this season?

He plays BDB as a left back and leaves him on when things are difficult. Pope insisted on hitting the ball if he could catch it. Playing players who are not 100% fit.

What would success mean in the 2025/26 season for Newcastle United?

A cup final win and a performance in the competition that is the sum of its parts. And by beating the SMEs twice and eliminating liVARpool.

What do you see as the minimum you need to achieve next season?

A top six finish, but mainly because of performances that suit the team we have now. I don’t expect us to win every match, but I certainly expect better results and performances against the “other 14”.

Predict the top six in the Premier League (in order) and which three clubs will be relegated.

With NUFC now having won a trophy… has that changed your priorities at all, with the club now finding a balance between winning Champions League football on a regular basis and trying to win cups?

Winning something was just great.

The league and the Champions League are all about money, but it was just incredible to see us win one, with my son as the bus passed by with the trophy.

Would you rather finish all three seasons in the top four BUT win nothing, or finish all three seasons in the middle of the table AND win the FA Cup in one of the three?

If we finish in the top four it would imply that we have played well in the league and have been good to watch, which is not the case this season. We have been in the middle or worse for years. Let’s see a change.

What do you make of the fact that we are now over four years after the takeover and still no plans have been announced for a new training ground, nor for a much larger capacity stadium (either brand new or larger capacity St James’ Park)?

This is the biggest problem holding Newcastle United back.

The new 75/80k ground would be a life-changing moment for the club and for all of us. Maybe I can go again! I can’t understand the lack of progress off the field.

If Newcastle United were to look to the transfer market in January to strengthen the squad, what do you see as the priority (or priorities…)?

Start from the back. Buy a top class goalkeeper or invest in Ramsdale as he could be that player. Make a decision about the crazy man Osula. Sell him and buy a new emerging talent, or give him a good chance. A scoring midfielder would also be fine, give a creative number 10 or Barnes a chance there.

Would you say winning the Carabao Cup last season has made you more satisfied, or now makes you more desperate for the next one?

I think it filled a bucket list number, but I would like to see us become serial winners like other clubs.

There’s no reason why not. I know Eddie wants that too. If he stays another ten years, we can do that.
