Anthony Kim’s journey through professional golf, from early fame to disappearing for twelve years and now becoming a winner again at LIV Golf, is undoubtedly distinctive. And the way he built his new bag lineup reflects that uniqueness.
On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-host Johnny Wunder, who has become friends with Kim over the past year, explains how Kim started testing new equipment when he returned to a completely different world of professional golf.
When Kim, now 40, won his first two PGA Tour titles in 2008, 16 years ago, the first adjustable-loft driver had yet to hit the market. Launch monitors were present on the PGA Tour, but were not the fixture they are today.
Custom club fitting has been around for a while, but we were only just starting to push the boundaries of the individual optimization we can now achieve.
In some ways, Kim is still rooted in those old-fashioned ways.
Wunder met Kim last year and befriended him after taking a practice round with him at LIV Golf Virginia. This is how Wunder started to understand how Kim thinks differently about equipment.

“It was interesting,” Wunder said. “You’re talking to someone, trying to help them and answer questions for them, but they don’t know Trackman, they don’t know Foresight. They don’t even speak the modern golf ball.”
He used his connections in the equipment room whenever Kim asked him a product such as a wedge or a driverWunder would reach out and buy one for him to test.
Kim then gave his feedback to Wunder.
“He would get stuff and he would test it and he would say I like it because it does this. It was all very ball related,” Wunder said. “It was, ‘I swing this way and the ball goes that way.’ There are no numbers.”
Wunder said that Kim has built his bag around feeling and that this is non-negotiable for him.
Yet over the past month, as he reclaimed his spot at LIV Golf and his first global victory since 2010, he has made tremendous progress with his game.
