When Bill Clinton was in the Oval Office, agents were sent from the secret service to San Francisco to prepare for his Tee time at the Olympic club.

They soon reported that everything was ready for the arrival of the golf loving president. They had secured the building. There was only one problem, the agents noticed. They could not find the course.

They were not the first to get confused.

Although it is known for golf, the Olympic club has always had a wider sports range. The original focus was in fact not golf at all. It was fitness and general athletics. The infrastructure of the club reflects that fact.

Today connect “Olympic Club” to Google Maps and two addresses appear. One of these is for the wave facilities, the famous guest location of 12 USGA championships, including the American amateur earlier this month. The other is for the clubhouse in the city center, seven miles away. That clubhouse dates from before the Golf. It was opened in 1893 (the Olympic club itself dates even further; it was founded in 1860 and is recognized as the oldest athletic club in the world). The early members were boxers, rowers, swimmers and track-and-field athletes. Not long after, basketball players became part of the mix. Regardless of the sport, Olympic club athletes are routinely among the best of the best. Many were (and some are still) real Olympians, enjoying world -class facilities to match their skills.

The original clubhouse in the city center did not last. It was destroyed by fires in the aftermath of the earthquake in San Francisco from 1906, but was reconstructed in 1912 at the same location after the street.

The reborn building was and is a miracle, which offers athletes in 19 sports and with remarkable facilities such as Natatorium, overhanging by two beautiful colored glass domes. Until 1960, salt water was pumped into the natatorium by a pipeline from the sea. The club has since been converted into chlorinated water in its PolishMultural, where Olympian continues to sharpen their strokes today.

Golf was added to the Rota in 1918, when the club got what was then known as the Lakeside Golf Club. The Golfclubhuis was opened in 1925 and it is also striking, a grand, red-tiles Spanish Revival building, with a view of the Championship Lake course. Like in the clubhouse in the city center, history runs deep.

During a recent visit to San Francisco, Golf.com visited both clubhouses, those characteristics of brothers and sisters are not identical twins. View the above or On YouTube hereAnd you will never confuse the two addresses.
