E-bikes are a fantastic way to get around, offering lots of practical mobility while vastly reducing oil consumption and contribution to climate change. But e-bikes also have a dark side: they offer kids, who love to do crazy tricks on two wheels, more power for less money than ever before. Now jurisdictions are starting to crack down on such behavior, and Irvine, California is the latest among them.
Local point of sale Voice of OC reported the Irvine City Council’s new moves, which are on track to become tough and fast regulations. The city is taking a number of measures to combat the recklessness of e-bikes, from heavy fines for unruly behavior to the possible confiscation of bicycles – and is even threatening to hold the parents of underage cyclists liable. Many of the changes focus on speed limits on bike lanes, which would likely be an easy change for the city to implement and enforce in a fair manner.
I don’t envy legislators charged with regulating e-bikes
