This car ranks as the most stolen vehicle in America

Thieves focus on one type of car above all others, stolen much more often with this American vehicle than any other brand or model, new data shows.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which sells for around $ 75,400, had a theft percentage 39 times higher than the average for all vehicles with the model years 2022 to 2024, according to a new report from the Highway Loss Data Institute or HLDI.

The model is a high-quality version of the cheaper Chevrolet Camaro, the theft of which was 13 times higher than the average for the same model years 2022-2024.

The Camaro sports car is for sale for between $ 32,495 and can rise to around $ 50,000, depending on the finish, the transmission type and other options that a buyer selects.

In order to determine the most sailed vehicles, the HLDI analyzed stolen vehicle data for 2022-2024 car models between the years of 2021 and 2024.

“What all vehicles in the top 20 have in common is that they are relatively expensive, relatively powerful and in many cases they are pick -up trucks,” Matt Moore, Chief Insurance Operations Officer at HLDI, told CBS Moneywatch.

Spiercars are attractive for thieves because they are looking for vehicles with a high horsepower, the group said.

The Camaro models have a different function that they make vulnerable: gates on board that contain vehicle data, such as fuel emissions and performance statistics, but can also serve as a point of access for thieves.

“In the case of Camaro ZL1 it is very desirable for thieves, and moreover there is a vulnerability that makes them relatively easy to steal,” said Moore.

“Because of the vulnerability, with the right knowledge and the right pieces of technology, someone who can gain access to the inside of one of these Camaros can steal it relatively easily,” said Moore, and noted that he did not want to describe the process more accurately not to encourage thieves.

Earlier this year, Chevy -owner -General Motors released a software update for 2020 to 2024 Camaro models aimed at improving security.

“This body control -module software -improvement includes an important security update for certain model year 2020 to 2024 Chevrolet Camaros,” a GM spokesperson said in a statement Auto blog GM Authority. “GM takes care of feeding theft methods as they evolve. We regularly work with law enforcement agencies to identify emerging tactics that can influence our products and, if necessary, make updates to defend themselves against them.”

The 20 most stolen vehicles

Pick -up trucks and other expensive or powerful models were also often stolen and, according to the report, appear on the list of the top 20 vehicles with the highest claim frequencies for full feed theft.

The 20th most often stolen vehicles

There was a common thread among the vehicles that thieves tend to get rid of: eight out of 20 least stolen vehicles were electric, while two plug-in hybrid models were, according to the report.

“Based on the fact that many of these ‘connected’ vehicles are, it is not easy to have one of these stolen electric vehicles, it is a proposal with a high risk,” said Moore. “Moreover, they must be charged regularly, so that many of their owners probably have garages.”

That means that less appears on the street, so that thieves offer less opportunity to steal them, Moore explained.

“They are not on the street at night and that is why they are less vulnerable,” he said.
