Wrexham Journey to colleague championship side Preston North End in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Since confirming their promotion from League One, Wrexham has been busy in the transfer market, so that 10 new first-team signing sessions have been introduced prior to the 2025/26 campaign. The Red Dragons aim high, with long-term ambitions to reach the Premier League, but back-to-back defeats at the start of life in the championship gave them a serious introduction.

On the opening day, two late goals from Southampton took the victory away from Wrexham, before a 3-1 deficit against West Brom on the racing track was reduced to 3-2 thanks to Sam Smith’s 95th minute of dragging. The Red Dragons took their first point of the season the last time out, however.

They went 2-2 with Sheffield on Wednesday, but led the match 2-0 to the hour. The side of Phil Parkinson defeated Hull City on penalties in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Preston North End will gladly retain their strong start of the season and remain unbeaten so far. Their 2-1 victory over Leicester City last weekend was impressive, but to support that with a victory over Leicester City was even more.

In those victories, new signing sessions Daniel Iversen And Thierry Klein have drawn attention. After a very bad campaign last year, North End looks very strong this time.

The side of Paul Heckingbottom defeated League Two Barrow 1-0 in the last round of the cup. A cup run will go well with their impressive start of the competition campaign.

Here a handful of our writers do their predictions for the game …

Charlie Hodgson

“One of the many all opportunities in the second round of the cup here. Two sides with contrasting starts of their campaigns, and many would have predicted the two to be the other way around.

“For everything they have spent, Wrexham started the season badly in terms of results. There have been promising signs, but the results must come soon.

Preston North End, however, has been the opposite. They have already defeated two degraded Premier League parties, and after a decent FA Cup run last year, I believe they will come here at the top of Wrexham. “

Prediction: Preston North End 1-0 Wrexham

James Ray

Preston North End has exceeded expectations early on and that victory on Ipswich Town is really an impressive result. Many, including myself, thought they would really struggle, but there can only be positivity from how they get going.

“With Wrexham who has difficulty working, I tend to a home victory here. The red dragons keep throwing the points away and if they find success in this season, they just have to improve.

“The visitors will probably rotate more than PNE, but I think this will yield a more coherent performance of the hosts. I will support Preston to get it done in another solid result.”

Prediction: Preston North End 2-1 Wrexham
