These are the coolest pieces of car decoration in your home – Jalopnik

Earlier this week we asked you what the coolest car-themed decor in your home is, and at the risk of sounding like a nerd, many of your homes must be pretty cool. I’m especially jealous of the engine block tables, because I’ve always liked that idea. If you’re looking for a fun car-themed home decor, or even if you’re just curious about how many ways cars can be integrated into your home, go back and check out all the original answers.

I said my coolest car-themed decor is my little collection of license plates that I hang on my living room wall. I recently moved to a new place and was reminded how challenging it can be to decorate an empty space, but I knew I wanted my license plates to be proudly displayed. Most of them are also sentimental that I get from friends and family, but some I just bought at a thrift store. That’s enough of my wanderings; You all clicked on this to hear from the public, so here are a few of my favorite answers.

Brock Yates’ laundry basket

Slightly funny story. Legendary automotive journalist Brock Yates had a house in a matter of minutes. from my wife’s hometown. When he passed away, my wife and mother-in-law attended the sale of his estate. I had no idea the event was happening, and when I got home, my wife casually mentioned, “Yeah, Mom and I went to some racing guy’s estate sale. Yates, something like that…” My jaw dropped and I said, “Brock Yates had an estate sale?” My wife says, “Yes, that’s that guy. There were race car parts and other things, but I really liked this piece.” She shows me a cedar chest that Brock used as a clothes basket.

So instead of a cool racing front clip from a stock car, or a racing wheel as a coffee table for my garage, I proudly own the Brock Yates clothes basket in the laundry room.

Lego Porsche 911 Targa from 1989

My kids gave a Lego pack for an ’89 Targa 911, a car I’ve had for 17 years. I put it together with my college-age daughter and it sits perfectly on a shelf in the living room. It even has a few operational features, like the steering wheel and hood/trunk. The wife only allows it because the children gave it to me.

Wheel table

Wheel table. One of my wheels got damaged right in the middle of the barrel. One day it was pointed out to me by my tire guy. Since the wheel was otherwise straight, I found a stand and a piece of glass online and made a small table out of it in my basement. I have no idea how a barrel gets a huge dent right in the middle, but that explains why the car had fairly new tires when I bought it.

Race car parts

I have a piece of the #43 BMW LMR V12 that Bill Auberlen flipped at the Petit LeMans circa 2001. I plucked it from a waste barrel along the main straight and took it to the pits the next morning. I walked up to Bill, wished him a happy early birthday and he signed it “Learn to Fly Bill Auberlen”. It is framed and covered with red clay. Next to it is an end plate of the rear wing of Ralf Schumaker’s BMW-Williams from the last race for them before he announced his switch to Toyota. No signature, but a note from Williams showing the history.

The license plate refrigerator

Living in the upper Midwest, where land is relatively cheap and two-car garages are ubiquitous, I have embraced the idea of Garage as Mancave/Carcave, complete with large screen TV, multi-speaker sound system, and a refrigerator/freezer in the garage with drinks and snacks. The refrigerator in question is a 30 year old Kenmore decorated with the license plates of where we lived as a family, stickers of places visited and breweries I found along the way. Every time I watch it, I think back to road trips, fun times, and sometimes foggy mornings. If it ever breaks, I’ll be devastated.

A Z-Car poster signed by the Z-Car’s father

Cool is subjective, of course – but as an old Z car nerd, the Internet Z Car Club arranged for a poster of the Z’s life cycle years ago and managed to get Mr. K to sign it. I’ve had mine framed and hung since I got it.

Engine table

Not car related but I made a side table from the engine of a BMW K75. I turned it vertically, installed threaded rods and some feet, and added spacers in the valve cover bolts for a piece of glass. It’s pretty useful IMHO.

Engine parts as wall art

I have a few engine parts that I cleaned up and used as wall art. An Alfa GTV6 valve cover that I stripped and refinished with red crackle paint, and a Ferrari F355 spark plug cover that was left in a worn and weathered condition with about half of the original paint still in it, just cleaned of dirt and grease.
