Before you groan too loudly, reader, this is not the same Nissan Murano from ten years ago. Nissan has given us the first significantly updated Murano since 2016. So let’s be open to it. And while the previous Murano was increasingly overwhelmed by its competition, it still served as a loyal family carrier that buyers could rely on.

Entering its fourth generation, the 2025 Murano has received significant updates, including a fresh new exterior design, a new turbocharged engine and a host of interior upgrades. These changes make this car more relevant, while maintaining the Murano’s reputation for durability and longevity. Let’s take a look at the updates that usher in the modern era of this cool SUV.

To provide the most accurate and up-to-date information, this article uses data provided by Nissan and several authoritative sources, including the EPA, JD Power and Repairpal.

The 2025 Murano marks the fourth generation of this mid-size SUV and brings with it a fresh design and updated features. The exterior redesign includes a wider stance, new ‘Crystal Cube’ LED headlights and a full-width LED taillight bar, in line with Nissan’s latest design language. The previous 3.5-liter V6 engine has been replaced by a 2.0-liter VC-Turbo inline-four, mated to a new nine-speed automatic transmission.

Inside, the new Murano features dual 12.3-inch digital displays, ventilated and massaging front seats and a redesigned center console with push-button switch, as well as Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite and the latest ProPILOT Assist system for enhanced driver assistance.

The exterior design of the Murano 2025 differs significantly from its predecessor. The vehicle’s width has increased by 2.6 inches, giving it a more substantial road presence. The front features Nissan’s ‘V-motion’ grille, followed by ultra-thin LED headlights with hidden daytime running lights. Not only do these design elements improve the car’s aesthetics, but Nissan says they also improve aerodynamics.

At the rear, the Murano showcases a new tailgate and bumper design that hides the rear wiper and exhaust tips, contributing to a neater appearance. The license plate has been moved to the bumper, highlighting the new full-width LED taillights. The top trim includes a power liftgate with a kick sensor for added convenience.

Interior comfort and technology are making a big leap

Inside, the 2025 Murano has been transformed into a “sanctuary for the road,” as Nissan describes it. Our own Seth Miersma even calls the interior ‘a class above what is expected here’. The interior features dual 12.3-inch digital displays that serve as the infotainment system and instrument cluster. These screens offer sharp graphics and are complemented by a new two-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel.

Murano’s interior materials have been upgraded, with new trim options such as ‘Murano Glass’, which changes color with the light and adds a touch of elegance. Front seat comfort is enhanced by available ventilated and massaging seats, while the rear seats benefit from thinner front seat backs, creating more legroom. The interior also features amenities such as ambient lighting in 64 colors, a panoramic moonroof and a wireless phone charger integrated into the redesigned center console.

Performance and driving experience have also evolved

Under the hood, the 2025 Murano introduces a new 2.0-liter VC-Turbo inline-four engine that produces 241 hp and 260 Nm of torque. This engine replaces the previous (outdated) 3.5-liter V6 and is mated to a new nine-speed automatic transmission, replacing the outgoing continuously variable transmission (CVT). The new powertrain delivers a more engaging driving experience with improved responsiveness, efficiency and reliability.

Despite the change in engine configuration, fuel consumption remains competitive, with a EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined for both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models. The Murano’s ride quality has also been improved with upgraded dampers that improve comfort without sacrificing handling.

Premium safety and driver assistance features

The 2025 Murano gets stacks of safety features thanks to Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite, including automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitoring and more. In addition, the latest ProPILOT Assist system is available, which offers adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance for a more relaxed driving experience. These advanced safety technologies add to the Murano’s overall value and provide peace of mind for both drivers and passengers. Its excellent safety and design also led to it receiving the coveted award Top Safety Choice+ recommendation from the IIHS, as well as a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.

All trims come with a host of standard features, with higher trims offering additional luxury and technological features.

Continuing a legacy of reliability

One of the main reasons why the Nissan Murano is a favorite among drivers is its reputation for reliability. The 2025 model continues this tradition, with a new, efficient powertrain and a simplified mechanical layout that reduces the chance of problems. The new nine-speed automatic transmission is designed for durability and smooth operation, and the VC-Turbo engine’s variable compression technology aims to optimize all the practicalities you expect from Nissan, such as efficiency, performance and feel.

In J.D. Power’s reliability survey, the 2025 Nissan Murano was the highest-rated midsize SUV in its class, beating Hondas, Hyundais and Subarus. However, this is nothing new. Nissan has kept the Murano as a standard bearer of reliability for years. Routine maintenance of the Murano is simple and with proper care the vehicle is expected to provide many years of reliable service. This commitment to reliability makes the 2025 Murano an excellent choice for anyone who wants a durable SUV that doesn’t have to cause a sensation.

TopSpeed’s take: The Murano is back and it’s better

The all new 2025 Nissan Murano successfully brings this aging SUV into the conversation of modern design and advanced technology, while still living up to the brand’s renowned reputation for reliability. With its updated exterior, upgraded interior and new powertrain, the Murano offers quite an attractive package. If you take into account that JD Power considered it one of the most reliable SUVs on the market, then this, still rather boring model, is difficult to deny.
