‘The wrong thing to do’: Australia and the world respond to Israel’s strike on Hamas in Qatar

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has the air strikes of Israel aimed at the leaders of Hamas in Qatar and says that they will “clearly make it more difficult” to reach a peace agreement and they risk further escalation in the conflict in the middle.
The attack killed five members of Hamas, including the son of Al-Hayya, and a Qatari Security Officer, Hamas said.
The escalation has encouraged the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday.
Negotiations to devise a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas and hostages have often taken place in the Gulf state – next to Egypt and the United States.
Wong said these attacks in Qatar that emphasized those efforts.
“The Australian government believes that this was wrong to do. Qatar, as you know, has been one of the parties who are looking for an immediate cessation -it has worked with the United States on the return of hostages,” she told ABC News Breakfast Wednesday.

“This is a violation of the sovereignty of Qatar. It reasses it on the cessation -the fire and it risks escalation.”

Wong added that Australia was limited in his ability to end the conflict between Israel and Hamas, but continued to collaborate with others in peace.

“We cannot end the war. What we can do is the calls for a cease -the fires and the work and work of the United States and others to try to support the fires -” she said.
Later in the day, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also criticized the strikes, and said that the attack rose the sovereignty of Qatar and derailing -the fires risked negotiations.
“I want to see peace in that region, I don’t want to see an escalation,” he added.
US President Donald Trump also condemned Israel’s strikes in a rare reprimand against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and insisted that he played no role in the attack.
“This was a decision by Prime Minister Netanyahu, it was not a decision by me,” Trump said in a position about his social network.

“I see Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the US and I feel very bad about the location of the attack,” he said, although he added that eliminating Hamas was still a “worthy goal”.

Trump agreed that the attacks are damaged -the -fires -efforts.

‘War should not spread’

The UK, France and Germany have also sentenced the air strikes of Israel to Doha.
The French President Emmanuel Macron said on X that they “were unacceptable regardless of the motive” and added that “the war should not spread in the region”.
The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the attack “further escalation” in the volatile region risked.
“I condemn the strikes of Israel on Doha … The priority must be an immediate -Fires, the release of hostages and a huge increase in Gaza,” he posted on X.

Secretary-General António Guterres of the United Nations also condemned the attack.

In response to the conviction from France and Great Britain, Netanyahu accused the critics of forgetting Hamas’s fatal attack on Israel in October 2023.
“Much of the world, including a large part of the democratic world, or at least governments, are shameful, shameful forgotten on October 7,” he said during an American embassy function in Jerusalem.

“But I don’t forget, and Israel will never forget it.”

In Brussels, spokesperson Anouar El Anouni of the European Commission said: “Today’s air raid by Israel against Hamas leaders in Doha breaks the international law and territorial integrity of Qatar and risks further escalation of violence in the region.”

The United Arab Emirates called the Israeli attack on Doha “flagrant and cowardly”, while regional power Saudi Arabia denounced what it called “brutal Israeli aggression” against Qatar’s sovereignty.
It is not the first time that Qatar has been caught in the crossfire of the unrest in the middle.
Iran fired rockets on the American Al Udeid Airbase in June in retaliation for American strikes at Iranian nuclear locations.
