The world’s oldest club hockey cup returns as clubs prepare for the KO16 round of the AIG Irish Senior Cup

Wednesday February 18: The AIG Irish Senior Cup returns this weekend, with a new campaign in the world’s oldest club hockey cup, ready to deliver even more magical moments. This weekend, sixteen men’s and women’s clubs will take their first steps towards writing themselves into the annals of Irish hockey history.

In the men’s AIG Irish Senior Cup, Lisnagarvey begin the defense of their record-extending 27th AIG Irish Senior Cup title away from home in a repeat of last season’s final when they take on YMCA. South Antrim and Cookstown will meet in an all-Ulster clash, while Leinster sides Monkstown and UCD will also meet in a county clash. Two Munster teams will take on Leinster teams as Cork Harlequins host familiar foes Avoca, while Bandon make the trip to Dublin to take on Pembroke Wanderers. There will also be two Ulster teams on the road, with Instonians and Queen’s University playing away matches against Corinthian and Three Rock Rovers.

In the Women’s AIG Irish Senior Cup, reigning champions Railway Union host Ulster Elks in their first tie of the campaign. UCC welcomes the Catholic Institute to The Mardyke for a Munster derby. Queen’s University Belfast & Pembroke Wanderers, and Portadown & UCD will meet in two top-flight clashes in what is likely to be the toughest matches of the round. Corinthian and Cork Harlequins will both cause big trouble when they encounter Pegasus and Old Alex respectively. Lurgan and Monkstown also meet in an exciting match, with the latter looking to replicate their historic 2019 title. And Lisnagarvey hosts Loreto, the 2025 finalists, on Comber Road.

Elsewhere, the Irish Hockey Challenge reaches the quarter-finals stage, with 22 men’s and women’s teams in action this weekend.
