Forget about composting your coffee grounds – some Aussies try to change their green bins into improvised pets cemeteries.

While councils throughout the country roll out the green bins that are aimed at reducing the landfill, Burnie City Council in Tasmania has asked a rather unusual question of residents. Can they throw their deceased hairy (or feathered) friends in the Fogo Bin?

The answer, according to Mayor Teeny Brumby, is a solid “no”.

“When delivering the Fogo Service in the NW region Tasmania in 2024, it was often the question of whether the Fogo Bin could be used to collect Roadkill,” she explained.

Tasmania, unfortunately known as the ‘Roadkill Capital of the World’ because of the large number of animals that are beaten every year on its roads, is struggling with this peculiar problem while preparing for Fogo bins next month.

The unique animals in the wild, nocturnal behavior and road conditions of the state contribute to the grim statistics.

But why the hard no on Roadkill in the Fogo?

According to the operating director of the council, Damien Aherne, it all comes down to biosafility and safety of employees.

The Fogo waste is sorted by hand and the machine, which means that employees can be exposed to rotting animals.

“The practical consideration is that the material from the bins are sorted by hand and the machine, and dealing with dead animals is both a risk of health care and a psychological risk for employees in the facility,” said Mr Aherne.

“Indigenous animals can be infected with parasites or illness, and data is limited in the way the composting processes neutralize the risk,” he added.

In short, Roadkill is absolutely not a “food organic”.

Fogo: A mixed bag in Australia

Although Tasmania is a bit late for the Fogo party compared to other states, millions of Aussies have been using the system for more than a year.

New South Wales strives for a mandate over the entire state by 2030, where guidance clamber to get on board.

However, the rollout has not been without a hiccup.

Fogo bakes have received different reactions from users.

While some residents embrace the green bins, others have been less enthusiastic, even using their counter bins as doorsteps.

Victoria is also rolling out a fourbin system, including Fogo, in all local government areas, with a 2027 deadline for all councils to have a Fogo service.

In WA, all local councils in the Perth and Peel regions have a three-BIN-BIN system with Fogo collection, and the state government offers financing for Fogo processing.
