Keegan Bradley first says that you look at your phone and see that the call from the captain is coming. There is certainly uncertainty, but it disappears quickly because you can find out the tone. The call is also short. Then you hang up.
From there, Bradley said, he responded in a way when he was told in the past that he did not make the US Ryder Cup team.
“I’m pissed off,” he said.
And that is partly what the now captain shared with the top player in the American team classification so as not to be chosen for the team that will go to Bethpage Black next month. Was McNealy the most difficult choice to let the team off? Bradley would not say it, nor he has revealed how many players’ calls he did. He said that the calls were made last week after the Tour Championship, and that every player handled the news ‘as pros’.
“You never know if you’ll ever get another chance,” said Bradley. “This can be – you never know, maybe these guys all play multiple ryder cups in the future, maybe not, and as a player I was certainly aware of the last team.
“It is heartbreaking, because if you come so close to making a Ryder Cup team of the United States, one of the most difficult teams to make in every sport in the world, it is devastating if you don’t make it.”
Then there was the call he made – to himself.
Bradley was immediately under McNealy in the team classification, and he will not play either. That call, he said, was made ‘a while ago’, although he said he still felt the effect.
“Yes, Monday was difficult for me,” said Bradley. “I was just alongside the guys that didn’t make the team. I was moping around. I was bummed out. But quickly you realize what a dream it is to be a Ryder Cup captain and what a dream it is to be a Ryder Cup captain for these 12 guys that I know, that I know so well, and a Ryder Cup Captain at Bethpage Black, Where I Showed Up to St. John’s as an 18-year-old Kid with a Dream of Playing on the Pga Tour and Never Dreaming or Being a Ryder Cup Captain and I return to the same course as the captain of these guys representing our country, and that’s the most important thing.
“Again, I don’t care how it works, as long as we win on Sunday. I am incredibly honored to become the Ryder Cup captain. I think part of it was a relief and I can concentrate on this and encourage these guys for the next month or so.”
Of course not every call was sour.
Bradley said he enjoyed calling Young and Griffin, who will play in their first Ryder Cup. Burns, he said, showed emotion.
Regarding Cantlay, who is there, shall we say, reserved?
“Pat did not give me emotion, what – but it was great,” Bradley.
“I’ve been looking forward to these calls for months.”
