Shreyas Iyer has scripted one of the best comeback stories in Indian Cricket. After lost his central contract from BCCI last year, the stylish Mumbai seizure bounced back with consistent versions in domestic and international cricket.
Iyer shone in the ICC Champions trophy and ended as the second highest run scorer with 243 points in five innings on an average of 48.60. His census included two half centuries and a top score of 79, which played a key role in India who won their second consecutive White ball title after the T20 World Cup 2024 Triumph.
During his time away from the national team, Iyer was not inactive. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title and led Mumbai to victories in the Syed Mushtaq Ali and Ranji Trophy tournaments. Those leadership roles and domestic runs made their way back to the India team.
Disadvently about his journey Iyer said: “It was a roller coaster ride and it seemed to be in a mess earlier. But I told myself that I had to put a routine, discipline myself and played a homely cricket. Ranji, Vijay Hazare Games and Syed Mushtaq Ali helps me the confidence and momentum in the champion.”
Iyer was particularly impressive against England and scored 181 runs in three ODIs on an average over 60 and a success rate of 123. He used that series for critics who had long been questioned to deal with short bowling.
“In the past two years there were conversations that I couldn’t play a certain shot. I wanted to prove that everyone was wrong,” Iyer said. “I have worked hard to hire bowlers such as Archer and Wood, to bring myself into printing situations. The more you practice those photos, the more confidence you get.”
Iyer added his mentality during the Champions trophy, added,
“In the beginning I played a ball at Ball and then took the lead against the bowlers. We knew that 250-300 was a winning total in Dubai, and my job was to bring us there. With our bowling line-up we were confident to defend or chase each total.”
In 2025, Iyer already collected 424 runs in eight ODIinings with an average of 53 and a success rate of 93.59, including four fifties. His next test starts on October 19, when India is opposite Australia in an ODI series of three games.
