Imagine being in line For 30,000 fans in Cessna Stadium to run a 15 -second race. Most people who grew up playing sports never get the chance to experience something like that. Neither do many people understand why athletes train so much for so little time in action. But for Marquel Russell, from Topeka, Kansas, he did not have to imagine because it was the reality, and it was not a new feeling for him. He lives for this kind of moments. He closes his eyes. He breathes in and out. He is about to give people the performance of your life.

Maybe it’s the added pressure or maybe it’s a bit of fear, but there is an aspect of racing for so many people who always encourage him to keep racing. He thrives on the energy that the other runners would bring, especially if they were just as good or better than he was. He channeled that energy and pours it in the 15 seconds that he is on the track.

“When I am in the starting blocks, I close my eyes and imagine how one of my favorite Olympians starts his blocks,” Marquel said.

The race is over quickly. He crowned the 6a 6A Kansas State Track & Field champion 2021 for the 110 obstacles with a time of 14.79 seconds. He was not yet a special Olympic athlete, but he would soon have to make a transforming decision about what the next phase of his athletic career would look like.

Marquel Russell (center) experienced incredible success during his athletic career in high school, and that pattern continued to a special Olympic competition.

After graduating, Marquel College offers to walk, but his father, Jason Russell said: “We decided to go on a different path because studying, it would be very difficult for him. So we went the path of special Olympic Games and it changed his life enormously.”

That decision was probably the most impactful he has taken in his young athletic life.

All Henderson Coaches an Elite Special Olympics Softball Team, the Topeka stars. A team consists of high -level softball players who compete annually in regional events and on the Special Olympics Noord -Arikika Softball Championship.

“About 10 years ago I started a special Olympic men’s softball team with some of the athletes who were a little higher,” said Henderson. “I wanted to try to raise the game of the athletes at a higher level.”

Because of their success, the Topeka-based team became popular and collected media attention within the state. After seeing that cover, Marquel’s grandfather put out his hand and showed an interest in Marquel who came to the team. And during a walk with his wife, Henderson came across Marquel, who did Flips near the school. But here the catch – Marquel had never played a level of softball.

“He didn’t think he would be very good at it,” says Henderson. “I told him that we could develop the skills; I just needed the desire and the attitude.”

Marquel’s work ethics, raw athletics and skills such as athlete never abandoned him, and this matter was no exception. His attitude was outside the charts and his effort was there, along with physical strength. A characteristic that he was wearing that others really couldn’t compete was his speed. That track speed helps to run the base.

These important qualities played an important role in Marquel that made an impact on the 2022 USA Games in Orlando, FloridaContribute to the gold medal of the stars in the softball game.

“Marquel would not be where he is today without (support),” says Jason. “Coach Allen has been super influential. He always recommends Marquel for various things. He likes to have him in the team and he is just a huge supporter of Special Olympics and even Marquel.”

In September 2025 Marquel and the Topeka stars to Oklahoma City – the home base of USA Softball – to participate in the Special Olympics Softball Championship 2025 Noord -Amerika.

“I’m going to compete in a different US games, especially for a sport I live for, you know, it means a lot because I sometimes miss the high school job,” says Marquel.

It will compete in the 100-meter, 200 meters and long jump. In addition to what happens on the job, Marquel is delighted to meet new people and exchange pins with people from all over the country, which shows that an experience in the US is not limited to just competition.

“His ultimate goal is to go to World Games at some point, and I think that is what many people try to insist here in this area, in the hope that he will get the chance to compete at that high level,” says Jason. “Even at USA games it becomes a much higher level than what it is used to, and I think that will be really good, only for him to show off his athletic capacity.”

The electricity of a US games will be an atmosphere that he is known for his high school days and compete for a state championship. The cheers. The pressure. The rubber texture of the track pressed against his fingertips and became almost part of him. But this time the goal is a chance of a USA Games applied and the next step in his athletic journey.
