The right bag for the job: how external employees at Buffer choose their equipment

I have worn the same Patagonia Toromiro for the best part of a decade.

I bought it more than eight years ago for our company for Retreat in Madrid, and since then it has been a loyal companion through international journeys, coffee shops and countless journeys (it keeps almost enough away for a week and still fits under an aviation chair). It is simple, cool and functional.

But recently it started to show his age, helped by my dog, who chewed on the belts during his children’s phase. Those little scars are now smiling, but they are also a reminder that this bag has experienced a lot and that it is finally time to replace it.

My first thought was to buy the same bag again. But when I discovered that Patagonia had stopped the Toromiro, I started hunting an alternative.

Prior to our most recent company retreat, it touched me: the best place to find advice was not a gear overview, it was my colleagues. Employees remotely take their bags seriously and every choice carries a mix of usability, taste and lessons that have been learned in the hard way.

This is what I learned from my teammates at Buffer about the best bags for external work.

Style versus function (or both?)

A big theme that has clearly come by my colleagues is that a bag has to work hard And Look good. TamiFor example, uses two different bags, depending on the context: one Road active daily pack for travel, and a Manu Atelier Le Cambon If she “works outside locally”. “Backpacks are too ‘high school’ for me,” she joked, although she admits that the assessment of comfort is worthwhile while traveling.

Diego Also gives priority to aesthetics. He wears one Coach wallet for daily use, linking with a Muji hand luggage While traveling. “To be honest, it is not very practical,” he admitted, “but I just do it because I think it looks better. I give priority to fashion above self -assured usability.”

SuzanneIn the meantime, the Sweet has found spot. Her Calpak Kaya Gives her ‘style and function’, which carries everything she needs, but nothing more, making it lightweight and easy to use. As she says, “I get a lot of compliments on it!”

Sometimes the best choice of tasks is not intentional at all. Ark bought one Jack Wolfskin TRT 65L Hiking package, which was supplied with a removable 10L DayPack. He only used the large walking bag once or twice, but the small removable backpack became his daily companion and traveled with him around the world. It fits his laptop, works great for city life and walks and even has nice extras such as a built -in bottle opener. His friends say he is permanently attached to it.

Bags with history

Another surprise was how long some of these bags lasted. Octa has used the same In case of shoulder bag for 11 years. It is compact, durable and still protects his laptop – he once saw it falling out of an airplane, just to find the laptop unharmed.

Hailley Has worn her Knomo Beauchamp Backpack 14 Almost a decade and still like his timeless design and usability. Suzanne still owns her North Face backpack of the university, now 19 years old and still in regular rotation for travel. And Eric firmly with his Moshi -Bag For six years, recently switching after the zipper finally spent it – although the company has replaced the whole thing under his 10 -year warranty in a proof of quality.

It is clear that I don’t just hang it on a beloved bag.

Pack habits and hard lessons

My colleagues are not only picky about their bags; They are also full of smart tips and stories that turned out to be the insightful part of our conversations. Amanda realized that her new Stoppels and co -bag Had a side to the laptop compartment when her laptop almost slipped out. A quick catch saved it from teammates who saw it about to fall. AndyOne of buffers many photography enthusiasts, also quickly learned to check his zippers after a camera lens almost fell out of his Peak Design Backpack Midtrip.

Daisy swear by compartments: hair Blaak Fast Access Ractpack Has made her ‘an organization nerd’ in her words, and essentials such as chargers, passport and headphones exactly where she is needed. KellyThe approach is to use each trip the same packaging list, always the most important items (passport, wallet, telephone) at the top both the list and her bag, a North Face Jester BackpackSo they are easy to finish and quickly grab.

Different people shared lessons about less packing. “Always pack less than you think you need,” says Hailley. Tami repeated this: “I slowly have overpacking.” Diego takes this further and suggests that it will remain empty for a quarter of your bag to make room for gifts or purchases en route. Almost everyone called water resistance as non-negotiable, whether he had to survive a rainy commuting or only the inevitably spilled coffee. And Eric offers the most pragmatic top of all: “Always place a few underwear and a charger in your backpack when you fly – you never know if your suitcase will be missing.”

My collection meals

Talking to my colleagues reminded me that the right bag is more than specifications. For external employees, a bag becomes part of daily rituals and large adventures, with not only laptops and chargers, but also years of memories.

For now my Toromiro stays with me. It had a bit of a fresh in the washing machine, and although it is still a bit damaged, it does the work. If it’s time to replace it, I will have a lot of inspiration from my teammates – here is my checklist for my next bag for remote control:

  • Is there capacity for unexpected extras (such as gifts or equipment)?
  • Is it water -resistant enough for rain (or spilled coffee)?
  • Does it have compartments where I need them, without too much “faff”?
  • Does it become the Sweet Spot in appearance, usability and sustainability?
  • Will it survive years of travel and does it have a solid guarantee?
  • Do zippers, belts and closures feel reliable?
  • If I can’t view it in real life before I buy, is there a solid return policy?
