Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, has launched A virtual desktop service for Settopbox users. This means that the richest man in India, Reliance’s chairman Mukesh Ambani, hopes to change millions of TVs in the world’s most populated country in PCs.
Called JiopcThe service offers a cloud-based PC experience via Jio’s Settopbox, which is bundled for free with the Home Broadband service from the Telco or can be purchased separately for £ 5,499 ($ 64). Currently in free trial version and available via Waitlist, users can access the virtual desktop on their TV by connecting a keyboard and mouse as soon as they have received an invitation and have set their account.
The service currently has some restrictions, including no support for external peripherals, such as cameras and printers. Likewise, the Open-Source LibreOffice supports, which is installed in advance. To use Microsoft Office apps, users must access it through the available browser.
That said, the movement of Ambani with JIOPC looks promising – at least on paper.
Tarun Pathak, a research director at Counterpoint, said Techcrunch that JIOPC is a very effective way for Mumbai with a Mumbai -based company to increase its user base, which already has More than 488 million users.
About 70% of Indian households have a TV, but only 15% of them have a PC per path. But Jio -Platforms can have his hands full with marketing and explanation. “You have to convince people that you can still use a PC on your TV using the set -top box,” he said.
India’s active pay-TV set-top box User stock is on Almost 57 millionper government data. However, the traditional direct-to-home (DTH) TV market shrinks as more consumers shift to internet services. From March, the Active DTH subscriber base had fallen by 8% on an annual basis, the data shows.
PraBhu RAM, vice-president of the Industry Research Group (IRG) at Cybermedia Research (CMR), said that JIOPC, JIO, new Settopbox users of under-granting national and low income segments could.
“Although the potential range is wide, its success will depend on the implementation – especially when tackling connectivity gifts and digital literacy – and the ability to scale further than early adopters to serve effectively disadvantaged communities,” he noticed.
In the first quarter, the General PC market of India experienced More than 8% growth on an annual basis In shipments, reaching 3.3 million units – marking the seventh consecutive quarter of growth, per IDC. However, the penetration of the PC in the country remains relatively low, lagging behind important marketsIncluding the US and China, mainly because of the limited disposable income and the widespread use of smartphones such as primary computer equipment.
Pathak stated that Jio would reach potential PC buyers with JIOPC, it would require that partnerships with different app developers and providers should be for productivity solution and ensures that it has sufficient productivity apps to make the service valuable for consumers.
Companies such as Microsoft and many other cloud providers have been offering virtual desktop services on Enterprise customers for some time. The movement of Jio, however, represents the first serious consumer -oriented movement, Ram said.
