While Ruben Amorim’s position as head coach at Old Trafford Shakier is every week, a former coach of Manchester United claimed that there is an “obvious” candidate to replace him – and it is an iconic figure at the club.
The pressure is on
Despite a promising summer transfer window, the Red Devils campaign started exactly where it left the season – in disorder.
The 15th place last year in the Premier League was the worst of modern times. This was exacerbated by a bleak defeat in the Europa League final to Tottenham and early outputs of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
But the former sports manager then escaped, despite the terrible versions and results, when he arrived halfway through the campaign to replace Erik Ten Hag, deprived of the benefit of the summer transfer window or the preseason.
This time, however, there are no apologies. Amorim is fully supported in the market, both in terms of incoming and outgoing transfers, with more than £ 200 million spent on recruitment.
But three defeats, one draw and a lonely victory of their opening of five games of the new season, covered by a humiliating Carabao Cup output by League Two Grimsby Town, has already seen his future under the microscope.
If the results do not improve immediately, the position of Amorim will become increasingly untenable with reports that are already circulating around possible replacements. Ineos remain on it that they are firmly behind the 40-year-old.
The Old Trafford -Hierarchy wants their head coach to succeed, because his failure will be a reflection of themselves after enormous efforts have been made to bring him first to Manchester; And second to fully support him on the market.
But if the club is forced to act, Rene Meulensteen believes that there is an “obvious” candidate who could take over in the Theater of Dreams.
A return for Carrick
Meulensteen was the first team coach of Sir Alex Ferguson for six seasons-200-2013 during one of the most successful periods in the history of the club.
And the Dutchman is adamant, one of his former students, Michael Carrick, would be the “obvious” replacement for Amorim if Ineos decides to separate.
“Michael Carrick is perhaps the obvious option if Ruben Amorim has to go,” says the 61-year-old in an interview passed on by Team.
“It is clear that Michael Carrick still knows some players who were there when he was there. So he still has good information. He knows the club clearly. He knows what is expected from the club.
“But the key is that you have to have a man who clearly has a clear idea, but places a kind of structure that the players buy and that you get a spark from the players. Because they are not bad players, there are many good players there.
“I am sure that if they play in a system that suits them, they really play at its best. I think you could see a fantastic Manchester United. Maybe Michael could be the man. It’s not a magic. It is more common sense than anything, it is it and Carrick has had enough.”
Carrick, 44, was an important part of the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer team in Old Trafford after he had a coaching position under Jose Mourinho after his retirement as a player.
The Multiple Premier League and Champions League winning midfielder was even appointed Cancetaker Manager after the resignation of Solskjaer in November 2021, which shows some Familiarity in the role earlier.
But his most important experience as a manager in senior football came with Middlesbrough, where the 44-year-old impression made in two seasons at the Riverside Stadium, before he finally lost his job in the third.
The idea that a young coach without a meaningful track record outside the championship is the ‘obvious’ candidate to take over the helm at Old Trafford is one that suggests that the opinion of Meulensteen is not sharpened with age.
