‘The Great Bambino’ began his career as a pitcher and outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, but after being sent to the New York Yankees for $25,000, the ‘Curse of the Bambino’ began for Boston and the Yankees were launched on the trajectory that made them perhaps the most famous franchise in professional sports.
Ruth would go on to hit 714 home runs, the most in MLB history until he was passed by Henry Aaron in 1975. Ruth led MLB in home runs 12 times during his 22-year career, and holds the all-time records in slugging percentage (.690) and an OPS (1.164). He also has seven World Series titles to his credit and is the only player to win both an ERA title and a batting title in his career.
Ruth retired after a brief return to Boston in 1935, and was one of the first players inducted into the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.
