NHL President of Content and Events Steve Mayer hinted that Dallas Cowboys would host the Stadium Series game
The NHL announced this on ESPN prior to Monday Night Football the 2027 Stadium Series was scheduled to be played on February 20, 2027 in Dallas, Texas at AT&T Stadium.
As of now, the Dallas Stars will be the host team as their opponent is unknown at this time. However, if you’ve been paying close attention, small hints were given prior to the season that “Jerry’s World” would organize an outdoor game.
NHL Outdoor Games in Florida will have a unique feel
During the NHL/NHLPA North American Player Tour, Steve Mayer, NHL President, Content and Events, joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Dave Pagnotta, Dennis Bernstein and Scott Laughlin. They discussed outdoor games and whether Jerry’s World would ever host one.

Scott Laughlin: “Well, look, the Cotton Bowl has been done before, and I know, Dave’s a fellow Cowboys fan like me. You mentioned Dallas. Have you ever talked to Steve with Jerry Jones about doing something in the big stadium? Jerry’s World, as they call it, because the Stars fans there, the state of Texas had bought so much into hockey, and the Dallas Stars in particular over the years. Ultimately, how exciting would it be to do something like that with 8090, there, say we have 100,000 fans there.”
Steve Mayer: “That would be really cool. Yeah, so we’ve had conversations. It’s interesting. When we went to the Cotton Bowl, we originally had conversations with all the different stadiums in the Dallas area. At that time, Jerry’s World, as you mentioned, had a different business model that just didn’t mesh with our business model.
Outdoor games are still very popular for the NHL
And part of this is a business and so we started talking as part of the exercise to Cotton Bowl to the baseball stadium. And don’t forget, that’s when I remembered that this was the old baseball stadium that they’ve had ever since. So it didn’t work. And then when we talked to Cotton Bowl, the more we talked, and then I finally went to the Oklahoma-Texas College football game, and I experienced it firsthand. I thought, this is incredible.
But we’ve talked since then and this is how I’m spending my summer. We go to stadiums and baseball, football, college football, and we just watch them, talk to the staff involved and decide what the future of the outdoor games is.
NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks, New Jersey Devils and the Dallas Stars
And we’ve had conversations. I’m not going to sit here and tell you anything else, not necessarily about Jerry Jones, but about the people who run that stadium. And if we go back to Dallas, I would say that would be a very strong possibility that we would play well there.”
So Mr. Mayer dropped a little nugget in September. Without saying it at the time, he planned to have an outdoor game with the NHL in Dallas at Jerry’s World. That hint has become reality.
The NHL returns to Dallas for outdoor competition and AT&T Stadium, “The House that Jerry Jones Built,” will host the 2027 Stadium Series.
