The Phoenix Suns are a rebuilding team around Devin Booker this season, and so far that has only led to one win. Not that the franchise is worried about the 29-year-old leaving The Valley, he signed a monstrous extension this offseason knowing where he stood.
But suppose Booker eventually tires of all the losing and realizes he’s running out of chances to win it all. If he were to officially ask to be traded — even off the record and just to the front office — there would immediately be a line of rivals trying to lure him away from Phoenix. From what we’ve seen so far this season, one franchise has emerged as the top trade partner for the Suns.
The San Antonio Spurs have everything the Suns could want.
Assuming both parties can make it work financially – and that neither party comes out on top – there are many ways to make that happen. Starting with Booker, the Spurs would be one of the best situations to send him to to win. Victor Wembanyama does way ahead of schedule – like league MVP this season right – and they’ll be contenders for years to come.

Suns owner Mat Ishbia would probably do Booker right, and if San Antonio is where he wanted to go, they would try to make that happen for him. If you’re Spurs, while the back end of Booker’s contract is eye-watering, they don’t yet have a top scorer that they could pair with the French phenomenon that would take them to the next level.
If you’re the Suns, you need to pick some point guards to start the discussion. If Ishbia doesn’t want to get out of trouble completely, then De’Aaron Fox would be the way to go. He brings a floor of around 25 wins and would help keep the team competitive on some nights. This is also the player that Spurs would want to part with in such a scenario to avoid having to pay him too.
Then there’s Stephon Castle, the reigning Rookie of the Year. He’s the kind of tenacious and exciting player the Suns would like to build around, and they already have the center to work with him in Khaman Maluach. If he weren’t to acquire him, the Suns would move to the second overall pick in this year’s draft, Dylan Harper.
He is also off to a great start in the competition, but it is unclear exactly where he fits in in Texas. The Spurs also have their own first-round picks in 2028 and 2029, as well as favorable swaps in 2026 and 2027. The Suns would get at least one, while players like Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan provide intrigue.
Not that the Suns want to think about this doomsday scenario, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the rest of the league for future deals. The Spurs are ahead of schedule and have three high-level point guards, plus some younger players and picks. Best of all, they would clearly need Booker if he was available as well. One to think about.
