Here are three things MLBTR readers should pay attention to throughout the day:

1. Giants 40-man move incoming:

Yesterday, the Giants officially announced that they had signed a right-hander Tyler Mahle. However, one more piece of the puzzle needs to be put into place before Mahle’s deal can become official: creating a 40-man roster spot for the right-hander. San Francisco’s roster is currently full, meaning one player will have to be removed to make room for Mahle. The Giants have not yet announced that transaction. That usually takes the form of a DFA or release, but it’s at least plausible that the team could work out a trade that creates 40-man roster space, as the Dodgers did just before the new year by shipping Esteury Ruiz to the Marlins. Whatever the corresponding move for Mahle may be, it is expected to be announced in the very near future.

2. DFA Resolutions on the Horizon:

Yesterday saw a few players who were stranded in the DFA area over the holidays find a new team, as did both of them Joey Wiemer (Nationals) and Jhonkensy Noel (Orioles) were claimed from waivers by new clubs. However, there are still several unresolved DFAs from the past holiday, and each of these issues will come to a conclusion in the coming days. MLBTR’s Darragh McDonald took a look at the players in DFA limbo just before the new year, featuring former notable prospects like Marco Luciano, Justyn Henry MalloyAnd Ken Waldicuk among the more interesting names waiting to find out where they will play in the future.

3. MLBTR Chat Today:

With the start of 2026, we are now just over a month away from spring training. The offseason is more than half over at this point, both in terms of the calendar and the impact of free agents on the board, with 30 of MLBTR’s Top 50 free agents already signed. However, many questions still remain about this offseason. Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman, Bo BichetteAnd Framber Valdez are among the number of top free agents still available, while the trade market is home to intriguing talents such as Edward Cabrera, Freddy PeraltaAnd Brendan Donovan all of which could still be moved. If you’re wondering what’s in store for your favorite team in the new year, or are just looking for the latest hot stove buzz, MLBTR’s Steve Adams has your back with a live chat scheduled for 1:00 PM CT today.
