David Tomasek is reportedly on his way back to Europe, according to a report from Varmsland Folkblad. Although the Edmonton Oilers have not confirmed the story, in an article entitled“Tomásek flies to Europe – formalities completed before FBK return,” it appears his NHL run and time with the Edmonton Oilers are coming to an end.
Rumor has it that Tomasek and the Oilers have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, clearing the way for him to return to the SHL.
For the Oilers, this move means no trade was necessary and the team regains cap space, giving them additional flexibility moving forward.
It’s a tough break for Tomasek, who never really got the full chance to establish himself. He showed flashes and had some solid moments, but in the long run it was unlikely he would get the opportunity he needed to prove himself in the NHL and earn another contract or deal with another team in free agency next summer.
Tomasek was a skilled forward and the knock on Tomasek was his skating, which arguably wasn’t where it needed to be to make an impact in the NHL. It’s hard to see a path where he even lingered in the top nine because the pace just wasn’t quite right.
Tomášek previously played for Färjestad from 2022 to 2024 before making the jump to the NHL. The oilmen signed him to a one-year contract last summer hoping he could carve out a role in the top nine and earn a spot as a reliable attacking threat. General manager Stan Bowman recently said there was no plan in Edmonton for Tomasek, whose job with the Oilers was threatened as soon as the team signed Jack Roslovic.
