The 2025-26 season is approaching fast, and although expectations may not be high for the pelicans in the NBA, they are certainly high within the pelican organization.
After a silly 2024-25 season that was full of injuries and losses, Joe Dumars came in and made many improvements to the New Orleans schedule in one low season. He added talent, championship experience, leadership and depth.
With the way the Pelican Roster was built, the Front Office probably expects them to be a competitive team that is slightly above next season .500. If there are signs to not reach that goal early in the 2025-26 campaign, the Pelicans can look to shake things up. If Dumars feels that change is needed at the start of next season, the obvious scapegoat is head coach Willie Green.
Since the takeover of the Pelicans in 2021, Green has compiled a mediocre profit loss record of 148 victories to 180 losses.
During this time there is a lack of success after the season, because Green De Pel’s has only led to the Play -Offs with the team once in his 4 years. The season they made the play-offs was 2023-24 and the OKC Thunder quickly eliminated them in 4 games.
With new leadership that the Front Office arrives this summer, many expected Green to be fired, as usually, when a new GM or President takes over, they like to hire their own head coach. Dumars, however, chose not to fire Green and gave him the chance to prove himself instead. But I suspect that Green’s error margin is not great, and he could get the boot for the new year.
It may not be just the teams for teams that lead to Green’s fire
Although I think that the record of the pelicans could play a major role in Green who is fired early in the following season, it is not the only reason why Dumars could decide to leave him. James Brego is the other reason.
Brego is a former head coach of the Charlotte Hornets and is currently the main assistant of Willie Green. The name Van Brego has been in many reports this season, including a leading candidate for the opening of the New York Knicks head coaching before she chose to hire Mike Brown. It is considered an offensive genius around the NBA and is highly respected. I very much doubt that Brego is taking a new cycle out of season without being called the head coach of a team.
The idea that Brego New Orleans leaves to become the head coach of another team is a scary thought for the Pelicans. Since the arrival he has only made the fur better, as in his first season in New Orleans, their ranking of the attack jumped up 10 places. Before he had him as an assistant to the Greens, the attack of the Pelicans was old and boring, which Borego has changed.
If the Pelicans start the 2025-26 season on the wrong foot, the obvious move to separate with Willie Green is. There is not only a lack of results with him as a head coach, but James Brego is perhaps also too good for the Pelicans not to promote.
