It has been a full decade since the Nissan Xterra went to the large parking lot in heaven, and although it was a suitable decision at that time, the off-road SUV segment has started in the years since the XTERRA cancellation. That left a gigantic, gaping hole in the line -up of Nissan that everyone assumed could not possibly be filled. But while the rumors continued to swirl and the border got a redesign, a new Xterra never appeared. However, 2028, that will change, Automotive news report.

During the same dealer meeting where Infiniti announced the return of the Q50, Nissan apparently confirmed that the Xterra would also make a comeback. Would it have been better if the new Xterra had appeared about a year after the new border? Of course, but that didn’t happen, and better late than never, right? We don’t really have a lot of details at the moment, so if you hoped for poctrain specifications and exact prices, you are out of luck.

That said, Automotive news claims that it will be “a robust, affordable medium -sized SUV” with “a blocky, adventurous design” and “an upright schedule and square headlights”, so it should at least see the role. It also expected that the new Xterra will use a hybrid V6 and says that there can even be a plug-in version that offers approximately 75 miles in range before the engine is switched on again. A plug-in-hybrid of 75 miles may sound ridiculous, but hey, if Nissan wants to build it, we will certainly not complain. That is sufficient reach for a number of serious emission-free off-road, and there are already PHEV SUVs from other brands with 50-mile.

Oh, and Nissan is said to be planning to build the new Xterra in the same factory in Canton, Mississippi, which builds the border.

Happy dealers and happy customers

As you can imagine, the Nissan dealers were pretty excited during the meeting to hear that the Xterra will return. Such as Tyler Slade, operational partner at Tim Dahle Nissan, said Automotive news“The Xterra brings a lot of emotion. It is an ambitious off-road vehicle for families.” Slade added that other off-road SUVs sell well, and he expects the same from the new Xterra and says: “These are vehicles for which every dealer sells and earns good money.”

Beyond the Xterra, however, there was more good news for dealers. Nissan is apparently planning to introduce 20 new or considerably updated vehicles between now and the second quarter of 2027, including a redesigned villain state whose Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier acknowledged that it would be incredibly important because the “Rogue is our center of gravity, our bread and butter.” Earlier this year, Nissan announced that it would make a new electric SUV-oriented electric SUV that would be built in the Canton factory from 2027, the Boxy model in the teaser above. It seems that it is a Bronco vs. Bronco sports situation can be, but for Xterras. Maybe Nissan will call that thing Eeterra.

Given the problems that Nissan recently had, if the Japanese automaker starts to survive, he urgently needs products that people actually want. The new CEO, Ivan Espinosa, seems like a cool guy, but whether we get a new silvia or not, he seems to understand the problems with which he is confronted. “We are at a crucial moment for this company. We are quick to take action to tackle our weaknesses and to strengthen our company fundamentals,” he reportedly said dealers, “I am convinced that we know what to be done to turn things around.”

Will the new Xterra be popular enough to save Nissan on one hand? Maybe not, but at least it gets more people in the dealers of Nissan, and that can only be a good thing for Nissan.
