The 28-year-old currently only has one England cap to his name, but it appears he is focused on adding more and will not take the opportunity to switch his international allegiance to Scotland.
Clarke is preparing for Scotland’s first World Cup in 28 years this summer, and there will certainly be plenty of fans already watching how to buy tickets for the scotland world cup for this unique opportunity.
However, it now appears to have been confirmed that Barnes will not be part of Scotland’s plans, with Clarke ruling this out and keen to continue with the saga.
Steve Clarke on Harvey Barnes choosing England over Scotland
As quoted by BBC SportsClarke said: “It’s the eternal question, everyone keeps asking me about it.
“This time I can say with certainty that Harvey will concentrate on trying to play for England. He will not be coming to Scotland.”
The Scotland manager added: “You can put that out there. No one needs to ask me or Harvey about it anymore.”
“Am I disappointed? No, listen, Harvey can make his own decision. We’ll move on.”
Could Harvey Barnes be part of England’s World Cup squad?
Barnes is a decent player who has put in impressive performances for Newcastle, but it’s probably fair to say that a place in England’s World Cup squad looks a bit ambitious.
There will be plenty of competition for places in attacking midfield, with Thomas Tuchel having the likes of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Morgan Rogers, Marcus Rashford and others to choose from.
Barnes has 12 goals and two assists in all competitions for Newcastle this season, so perhaps there is an outside chance he could feature, but even then he is unlikely to be a starter.
Scotland fans won’t be too concerned about this decision as no one wants to see players coming in who aren’t fully committed. But it seems a strange choice from Barnes himself as it certainly ends his hopes of playing in the World Cup, which would be seen as the pinnacle of most players’ careers.
Barnes was born in England, but has Scottish grandparents on her mother’s side. He has one England senior cap, plus fourteen appearances at youth level.
