The new cheap MacBook may lack the features you actually use

A new one leak from Weibo suggests that Apple’s upcoming budget laptop could arrive without several expected features. According to the post and other online sources, the rumored sub-$1,000 machine could drop True Tone display support, fast charging, and a backlit keyboard.

The 12.9-inch model would target the price range that Apple has not seriously addressed since the M1 MacBook Air. But buyers may face real tradeoffs to achieve that lower price.

The information also points out the lack of high impedance headphone support and slower SSD storage than the MacBook Air and Pro.

Display and charging are downgraded

The screen and power setup can take the biggest hits. This budget MacBook reportedly does not support True Tone, the feature that adjusts the screen color based on ambient light.

The driver for fast charging is also missing. So you wait longer for a full battery compared to other modern models.

The brightness may also decrease. While the MacBook Air offers a 500 nits panel, it could make do with something lower.

Audio is also cut off. The leak suggests it won’t support high-impedance headphones, a feature audiophiles use with professional equipment.

Wireless internet and storage speed take a back seat

Inside, Apple could skip its own wireless components. The leak instead points to a MediaTek Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, the same as in the base iPad.

That shift could impact connectivity, though it likely helps keep costs down.

Storage also seems slower. SSD read and write speeds are said to lag behind the Air and Pro. Most configurations top out at 256GB and 512GB, with a possible 128GB option for education buyers.

The keyboard may lose its backlight, making working in low light more difficult. And while 8GB of RAM meets Apple Intelligence requirements, the rest of the package feels stripped down.

What to look out for in March

Apple has not yet confirmed this and the leak brings a lot of uncertainty. The information comes from Weibo and other sources, so skepticism is natural. But the timing lines up with rumors of an event in early March.

The company is reportedly hosting a “special Apple experience” in London, New York and Shanghai on March 4. If a cheap MacBook exists, we’ll probably see it there, possibly with an iPhone 17e.

If you’re looking for a laptop, wait until early March for now. Either Apple announces something new or this leak disappears.
