Through early testing, one of the things that impressed our team most about the new Callaway Chrome Tour Golf Ball was the speed increase.

But during a recent test session, Fully Rested co-host Jake Morrow discovered that something else might be going on.

“But the problem was that I kept having moments where I turned around and looked at it [Fully Equipped Social Media Manager] Adam [Christensen] and like, wow, that was super off the toe or that was super off the heel,” Morrow said. “And then we would look at the data. And it was at one point there was a ball that I hit with the Triple Diamond Max and I was 18 in the heel and 12 low. And the ball turned at 27:00.”

Morrow explained that he would normally have expected such a shot to produce a huge jump in spin, over 3000. But with the new Chrome Tour, the spin stayed in a sweet spot.

The same thing happened at the other end when Morrow hit a drive high in the face, expecting the spin to drop below 2,000. But it was 2400, an amazing number for a miss.

Then he switched back to the Chrome Tour and the spin variance was even tighter.

“I need to know why because right now the story is that the ball is really fast, but I’m so far over with these golf balls because it’s fast,” Morrow said. “I actually don’t think the speed of these golf balls is the right story to tell. It’s the consistency and the stability of these golf balls.”

What also surprised Morrow is that the golf balls seemed to behave so similarly; why did they both have to exist? Why weren’t they further separated?

“If 80% of this stuff stays consistent,” Morrow said, “then you have very, very specific parameters of just these little things to choose from.”
